Not truly a 5hp compressor head

hey guys my name is Jake, I have on and off used this to find answers and I have now decided to post.


So i have been doing a lot of read on here and other places to figure out what to do when my 1945 brenner compressor decides to **** the bed.

Harbor Freight "5hp" 145 psi air compressor head:

Air delivery (1050 RPM): 17.3 CFM @ 40 PSI, 15.2 CFM @ 90 PSI

Now i would prefer to be in the 700-900 rpm range and this states I should use a 5hp motor to achieve what this pump is rated for. For what I have read and I also called phase-o-matic (3 phase 7.5 +hp motors can be had used around me for less then $100 usually $40-$70 so using that and a phase converter was an idea) I come up with along with not being surprised the HF pump is over rated by a fair amount.

I have found a single stage pump makes about 2-5 CFM per hp @ 90 psi, with that said that would mean the HF pump is really a 3hp pump. Im writing all of this because the motor on my Brenner is only a 2hp motor.

My air compressor works just fine at the moment so im in no rush but if someone disagrees with my findings would you be kind to explain where i have misread or misunderstood something.

If you believe your numbers then the pump is between 3 hp & 7 hp. I've always used ~ 4cfm per hp.

well 4 is what i would use, i was just giving the numbers that I found. so theoretically this is a 3.8 but thats most likely over rated so i would think its a 3 also.

Not sure about what numbers to use for a calculation. Take a look at Eaton compressors as well.

Do you happen to drive a 16v VW?

Throw in the fact that most "5HP" compressor motors are really only making around 3HP and the math really gets confusing... At least that's what I've read. Never dyno'd one myself.

No i owned a 1985 190 Cosworth benz :'( should never have sold that one.

well I got the air compressor in my possession and its a Brunner A2000. does anyone know where to get parts for them? it works just fine im just worried on what to buy when it blows lol unless i can get a rebuild kit. Rings, valves and HG

You could try a company called Atmosphair in Markham Ontario, but Brunner has been out of business for about 35 years now. They used to make refrigeration compressors for Dunham Bush though, so there was a huge installed base of machinery that might still be worth making parts for.
