I have been attempting to cleanup my office and file cabinets. I have a lot of old paperwork including purchase orders , bank and credit card statements I need to throw out. I'm interested in getting a better paper shredder that can handle the job. I like the one micro cut which cuts into small pieces. Anyone have recommendations.

You might laugh, but a 45gallon barrel with the top chopped off and a good cigarette lighter, is a cheaper and quicker option, then when all the ash has cooled down, you can empty it in the bin.

I'm laughing all right. That will be real handy in his office. :lol_hitti

Not sure if that will work with smoke and carbon detectors throughout the building.

200 or 220 litres depending on the brand of oil in the barrel. I''ve moved a few around in my job.

That's the most reasonably priced micro cut shredder with a 17 sheet capacity. It's NOT 100% duty cycle, as for every 20 minutes you shred, you have to let it cool off for 50 minutes. So about a 28% duty cycle.

To get a shredder with that kind of capacity and a 100% duty cycle, you're looking at thousands.

Damn! When my shredder finally gets beyond repair, that one's on my wish list. For now, I've got an ancient GBC built on a particleboard cabinet. I had trouble hiding my excitement when my last company was throwing it out about 10 years ago. It's continuous duty, with a 2HP motor and all metal drivetrain that cuts paper into rectangles about 1/16" x 1/8".

The amount of credit card offers that have been through that thing is redonculous.

Before that, I had a Royal 15MX 15 sheet cross-cut shredder. It was ok until I burned it out... We've got a 150MX (same thing, but newer model) at work now, but it isn't used that heavily, since we try to get as paperless as possible.

I have a Fellowes which works pretty well. Think I bought it in a Staples or other office supply "superstore". It's about the size of a kitchen garbage canister and does the micro cuts. I believe it was under $200 but bought it about 10 years ago.

Just a note of caution about the burn barrels, my FIL was airlifted to a burn center last year after pouring gas into one that he had mistakenly thought was cold. He's OK now but had suffered some pretty severe burns on his face, eyes, neck and hands. It could have been much worse. If anybody decides to use one, please be careful.

I have the 6-sheet version of this same machine. It works, but I hate it, and whenever I use it I think about buying something with a real, non-plastic-undersized-imported-junk motor so it won't clog every minute, then overheat trying to clear its clog, then need 30 minutes to try again.

If you shred junk mail as it comes, it works fine. If you do it in batches every month or two like me, then it *****.

I imagine the 17 sheet version would alleviate many of the problems that you have with your version's underpowered motor and limited capacity.

I have an older Staples SPL-770M microcut shredder with a stated 7-sheet capacity, and it still works great after 10 years. I feed it a page coated in vegetable oil once a year to keep the blades lubricated.
