Hello folks - another tool I need help with. It's apparently a notching plier, but quite small. Made in Japan, sold by a Vermont Company that I can't find a reference to.
Has anyone heard of "indecks"? Guesses about what this was made to cut notches in? Leather? Light metal?
Thanks for any info!

Thanks, Jacko264 - I didn't think of that but I suppose it could be.
I grew up in the days of tickets that got punched, and the only punchers that I remember made a small closed hole, sometimes round or with a symbolic shape, like a cloverleaf or a diamond.
This one seems a little too heavy-duty for that.

Thanks, readhead - it does look like that, but its small size makes me think of a hobbyist's tool.
I've found and sold several Malco sheet metal notchers and they're much beefier than this one.

I can't recall just what these were called, but:

shopping

You use a punch like that to remove the paper above certain holes. The cards can then be sorted by inserting a rod through the holes. The rod will pick up the cards that haven't had the holes slotted.

Just thinking that the name Indecks would be pronounced Index--as in index cards.

I have a similar tool and actually had it out on the bench, considering adding it to the "what's it?" thread. Mine is a little different, with a round nose on the cutter, but I'm guessing it serves the same purpose. It was missing the spring, so I added a "pruner style" spring. I don't see any markings on the tool. Not even owner's marks!

And right there it is!

Damn, I'm good.... I struggle with the day of the week, but remember some trivial thing from 60 years ago....
I usually call my folks every weekend. Called them yesterday and my Mom asked why I was calling on Friday.

Huh? Today is Saturday.

Go look on the phone calendar. Oh... well it felt like Saturday.

That is most likely a livestock ear notcher.
