It would seem anyway. These vises are nice. There is no doubt, I own one, and it is top notch. But come on, these things are going for CRAZY $$$ on the bay.

IMO Wilton's are not 2-3 times better than other good USA made vises, yet somehow command a much higher asking price. Perhaps they are the Snap-on of vises.

I think the metallic paint on the $575 Wilton is a hoot. If it's an actual automotive quality multi-stage paint job with clear using auto quality paint, the vise might be worth $300. If it's just Rustoleum's Metallic paint... somewhat less than $300.

The unrestored vised that they want $300+ for? NUTS.

One "not old" Reed vise... BIN $975. Restored nicely, though.

There's also a Reed 104, BIN $135. Looks an awful lot like the No 32 I just bought for $30.

It could be the nicest paint job in the world, it will look like **** after a couple months of use. They get scratched up. If the dude sunk $$$ into the paint, that adds zero value in my eyes.

I think Rustoleum is the more likely answer though.

After seeing what those idiots paid for their vises on the bay, it makes me feel better what I paid Friday for my Wilton. I went from the idiot stage to being merely stupid.....

You got a solid deal Hybrid. I paid $200 for my 1780 in similar shape. You didn't steal it, but you got a good price on a god tool.

I must be getting old. I remember when Wilton vises broke easily, were avoided, and I have never even considered owning one until a friend gave one to me. I have Columbians from the 70's at home, and have 2 old Columbians at work. Now THAT'S a vise.

I think that sites like this one have driven prices up. I, for one, never gave a second thought to Wilton vises until people on here kept on talking about them over and over and over again.

I hope that changes. But then again if they sell for so much maybe they won;t be treated as anvils.

I needed a new bench vise about a year ago, and wanted to buy American. But the Wlitons were just out of reach.
Found an old Craftsman vise being sold by a mechanic for $160 on craigslist. By the time I added shipping ($60), that thing was getting up there. But it is a solid piece of steel, and will probably outlats me. The wife thought it was alot of money, but understood how important a vise was.
And, I'll never have to buy another one!

I agree. I just found a 4" Wilton on Craigslist.

The photo shows a nicely painted bullet vise. I'd pay $100 for it if it was pristine, but not $175.

This is something we all need to consider. If there are tools you enjoy buying and can find deals on, maybe it isn't a great idea to post about them here until you have accumulated as many as you want. Competition drives prices up, at least for a while.

I couldn't agree with you more, and the funny thing is, selling Wilton's has brought me in a tidy sum. I encourage watchers to look at all vises. You and I both know Wilton is basically a newcommer into the world of USA made vises. I had a beauty of a Athol on 2 weeks ago, a 4" combo, dense 80lbs like new and drew a $134 bid along with a S__T A_S 4" Wilton that brought $195. It just doesn't make sense. I had a very nice Reed that went at a give a way for $76. Alot of people are just brainwashed I guess. Great Point.

forget the weight, check out that exposed screw, that really increases the value!....

I wouldn't pay 1/2 as much per pound for that as I'd pay for one similar to a wilton or parker type designs with a covered screw.
