Novice framing shed project...

Greetings all!

After several years of parking vehicles outside of my 3 car garage, I decided it was time for a shed. I searched online and found some plans and my son and I got to work. I have framed a few interior walls before but nothing like this. We're limited by the city to 120sq ft unpermitted so we went with a 10x12 that will have a roll up door. We also went with piers instead of a slab to keep the tax man away (any "permanent" structures require permitting ie;taxes). Anywho, on to the pics!

Tentatively marked out with some stakes from our old veggie garden

Floor framed up. 2x10 frame, 2x8 joists. 4 inch gravel under the piers. We have rock hard clay soil so it shouldn't go anywhere. Posts at 4x4's at the corners.

1st wall framed. I ended up having to take this wall apart due to a mix up at the lumber yard. I bought 92 5/8 studs, built two other walls and didn't realize my mistake until I stood them all up.

All the walls up.

Something to consider...

Dig out the dirt under the blocks and put them close to level to the ground. Won't need as tall of a ramp.

Here stud length and 8ft length costs the same. I just used 8ft and made the walls a bit taller. Handy to have more than 8ft when moving lumber around.

It's a little too late for digging. I don't mind the ramp. The 2x4's are the same price here too, I just wasn't paying attention when I started grabbing them, lol.

I got the ridge and a few rafters put up this morning before I headed into work this morning. Pictures forthcoming.

I used the floor plans from here but used joists instead of all those blocks. I got the rest from http://www.sdscad.com/ for $3.99. I couldn't find anything for free with those dimensions.

Nope. Our HOA doesn't have any officers yet to run it by. We basically pay a management company to maintain the common grounds and community pool at this point. We do have rules set by the developer though. Any outbuildings have to match the exterior of the home.

Gotcha. My property is sloped where I put my shed as well, but it worked out that the front was the lowest spot. I put a pad of road base down, and then set down 4 ea 4x6 PT "skids". Then I built my floor on top of that, 2x8 PT, 12" OC. I used 3/4" PT for the floor, though I may add another layer before moving stuff in because it's a bit flimsy IMO. I want to be able to store a small car in the shed if need be. (shed is 16x20)

I'm not sure how long PT will last with dirt contact, but I know they build pole barns with the poles in dirt and those last 50+ years... so I guess it would be fine.

The shed should look great, can't wait to see the roof go up.

I see you only have four piers in your first picture but the Dek-Block plans show 21 piers. I know they are trying to sell as many pier blocks as possible but do you think four is enough or are there more that I'm missing?

ETA
I see you've gone up to 2x8 and 2x10 for the framing from the 2x6 in the plans, that should help.

I was out of town this past weekend so I didn't get much done. Yea, I did 2x8 joists. I based it off of 54FordPanel's floor. I had a little time before work this morning and grabbed some 7/16th osb for the exterior walls. Also spied a 7x8 insulated door on clearance for $225. I would swap the one on the house to the shed. Tempting. I just need to finish the gables and 2x6 fascia and framing will be finished. I'm hoping to get some shingles on this thing by Saturday, even though I'm not looking forward to getting up there.

Do you have any collar ties on those rafters? I'd suggest it if you don't want the walls to push out over time.

Nice work, G-Mo. I thought it looked familiar. It should be very sturdy...mine is.
Any windows planned? They get dark in there without windows or lighting. Look for close-out/return windows at the HD or Lowes and see if you can work them in.
Can you run some electrical from your house, or is it too far to dig?

Thanks for posting your build.

I'm going to wire the interior up, just in case I ever need light or power in there. I'll just run an extention cord out as needed. Trying to stay inspection free.

I wish I was a pro, lol. I'd already be finished. I was back at it yesterday and today for a few hours. Finished the gable framing, fascia boards, collar ties and sheathing. I'm tired. On to the pics.....

Just got a heads up from a friend on a local roofing and siding supplier having a 50% sale. Looks like I'll be shopping again this weekend!

How long is the extension cord running that compressor? You are better off putting the compressor close to the house and runnibg hose to the building. A long extension cord will burn that compressor motor out in short order. Nice job on the shed. Put the collar ties 1/3 of the way up or more. it will give you more height inside the building.

Keep up the good work. Hopefully this will be the beginning of an even bigger project.

Its a 50 footer. I'll be hand nailing everything else so what's done is done.

I'm planning now for a pretty large deck project next Spring. Should be fun.

Are there any caps over that ridge vent? In the picture it looks like the shingle over ridge vent but doesn't look like it has any shingles on it. it will probably leak at all the seams where each 4' section goes together if you don't put caps over it.

The shed looks great. It'll be plenty strong with the lumber you used. Very nice.

Yea I think its the angle and the lighting. There was a storm on the way in so I didn't stop to take any pictures of the vent. I did snap a couple while I was up there though.

I have an anchor kit but haven't installed it yet. There were 40 mph wind gusts when I was putting the roof on this past weekend. We usually don't get much higher than that around here but you can never be too safe.

The shed weathered its first big storm early this morning. Some water got blow in but there's no signs of any roof leaks!

Nice man. You probably used more lumber to build that shed than was used to build my entire garage:bounce: Cool. Keep it up.
