Wow..

Can you imagine most any American teenaged kid laying the subfloor for a building that size BY HIMSELF with his SISTER and a neighbor doing some of the nailing?

He's so offhand about how various bits were done - I know enough about doing it to realize the hard work that every part of it was.
And in obviously subzero temperatures.

This is the same exact sort of hardworking German that my dad was.

Just no mental concept whatsoever of not doing whatever needed to be done. No hiring someone, just do it.

Check out the rest of the site-- that's a fantastic woodworking site too...

I grew up in a similar situation, so the concept of "hiring someone" is a still a difficult one for me. My dad always had a construction project on the go. The only thing that he'd hire out was the excavating, for that he'd call on Henry or Bill down the road. Everything else was done my by dad, my mom, and his four sons. The experience was invaluable. Before I turned 18, I had a hand in almost every aspect of construction.

I took it for granted, but as an adult, I've come across countless folk that never swung a hammer as a kid.

That is a sweet read!

I was raised that if you don't know how to do something, you learn. Get your hands dirty and work hard. My dad taught my everything I know. I was peeling logs by hand and chinking the log house he was building by the time I was 4. . . It's so hard for me to even think about hiring people. . .for anything. I'm just stubborn. . . I can do it!

I clicked around for half an hour and read a bunch of this guy's stuff, the I read his dad passed away in last October. Damn, that hurt more than it should have for half hour of reading...

On the other hand, I actually have heard of this guy before, and some of the machines he makes out of wood are ridiculously awesome. Look up his youtube channel if you want to waste 2 hours.
