I'd almost feel bad treating it like a vise, for that kind of price.

My poor $40 vise is covered in hammer blows, welding splatter, wire brush marks, grinder marks..... But it's still old faithful.

A good vise is the single most used tool in any shop-and the tool that gets abused and mis-used the most.I've had my OLD 6" wilton for many years -and my father had it in his shop for many years before he gave it to me.I think he bought it back in the 50s at an auction- I think we've gotten our money's worth out of it. I think it's out lasted several benches that it's been bolted to.

The Wilton (and most other vises, it seems), have replaceable jaws.

The Brockhaus does not seem to have that feature, nor does the Peddinghaus clone:

Maybe it's just the photos, but the jaws seem to be integral to the unit, and they do wear out.

The rule of thumb I heard was that if the Wilton had a rectangular Shaft it was imported and the round ones were made in the USA. The link below seems to corroborate that.

However, I think this is true only with new models.

I have an old Sears 5 inch jaw (A rebadged Columbian) that has a Made In USA Stamp that has a rectangular shaft. Got it for $25.00 at a Flea Market. The only reason I bought it was the fact I knew it was made in the USA.

I have a Wilton 5in. jaw that I found in a dumpster #101059. I need help help lifting it. It has a swivel base. From what I can see, it is in the seven or eight hundred doallar range. Not bad for dumpster picking. How it got there is anybodys guess.

I got mine for free because the jaws were missing. It weighs close to 100 lbs.

I used the jaws from my broken HF vise until I got the proper new ones.

I replaced the jaws on my Home Depot vise with some appropriate sized chunks of aluminum. I think they're 3/4-inch thick, 1-inch tall and the width of the jaw (6-inches). Drilled them and counter sunk the holes to make them a direct bolt-in.
Now I can firmly clamp anything I want, and it won't leave marks.
Just a tip for anyone with missing or worn-out jaws.

Good call! I was just about to post a question about this as my old Athol vise has smooth jaws.
