Any company sell sets of more common sizes? I just hate heading to the hardware store all the time. Wish I bought more when OSH closed.

Also Amazon grade 8 $60

Grade 8 Hex Cap Bolts Screws, Nuts, Washers, Lock Washers Assortment Kit - 380 Pieces! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M10U6PG/?tag=atomicindus08-20

It is painful comparing them all. But be careful. I ordered one that looked great and it was all small stuff. So read descriptions well.

I have a coffee can full of nuts, another of bolts, another of washers, and a few others. I rarely fail to find the one I need there.

Start collecting them.

I have tons of various ones I’ve gotten from the store or have been left from finishing a job LOL. Also when something comes with new ones I keep the old ones. It has saved me plenty of times. I do go to the hardware store if I have too though if I don’t have the right one. I have an organizer of the common ones then the less common I keep in a can.

There are lots of "kits" available as well as bulk sales at places like Tractor Supply. The first thing that you need to do is figure out your needs. If you generally work on classic American cars you don't need to stock up with metric bolts. Mostly work on foreign cars then you won't need an extensive supply of "standard" bolts.

For typical garage/automotive use something like 1/4, 5/16, 3/8 and 1/2 bolts, 1/2" to 1-1/2" long for small sizes and 1" to 2-1/2" long for the big sizes. for metric 5,6,8,10 and 12 mm, 10mm to 20mm long for small sizes and 20mm to 50mm for the big sizes. Outside of those lengths, probably be only a few times that you need something longer or shorter, just buy as needed.

My one huge (I mean HUGE) annoyance with my TSC is no 7/16" fasteners. Seriously, WTF?

As much as it pains me (seriously) to reco Fastenal, they used to sell a standard asst of either coarse OR fine thread fractional plus the 72 hole bin "free" for a decent price. You might give 'em a call.

If you want metric that gets trickier because there's ultimately more sizes (or thread pitches) so "sets" tend to be less complete.

Curious what you use 7/16-14 fasteners for?

I don't think I've ever touched one in my life....

Anytime i want more than 3/8" but less than 1/2". If I want fine thread I use 7/16-20. I have a bin of each.

If you ever put a lift on a TTB Ford -- which is something I never recommend (lifting one or owning one), the aftermarket rad arm brackets are held on with 7/16". But I use a good bit of it in general fab of stuff.

My local TSC has 7/16" fasteners in the bulk bins.

I hadn't either...UNTIL...I recently changed the "frame-to-body" cushions on my '79 Vette....and ALL of the bolts mounting these were....U got it....7/16"-14 bolts & nuts!!
I didn't want to pay the really high prices that Corvette Central was charging, so I went to a SMALL hdwe. store, and I couldn't believe they actually had 'em….for a lot less bucks....they were Grade 8, yellow cadmium plated...and they had the bolts in 3-1/2" length I needed as well!!

I have a few of cheap plastic bins on the wall from HD like these.

I always buy extras when at the store or ordering from MMC so my supply slowly grew over time. I label the bins w/ a marker. If needed, I can either move a bin, or the label comes off easily w/ brake cleaner and a rag. I am surprised how much weight these will hold.

I buy my bolts from McMaster Carr. At least I can buy US or Canada made bolts....and not the huge quantities MSC and Grainger sell them for.

I purchase all of my bolts through Fastenal. They can be pricy on some items but normally are pretty good and you can get most things within a day or two if they don't stock them.

I recently did the same, can't count the number of hours spent pawing thru boxes and cans of nuts and bolts looking for just the right one.

So I had a few marathon days of sorting and tossing old nuts, bolts and other hardware into a couple of 5 gallon buckets and left them on the curb with a "free" sign, gone in seconds!

Now I have a nice big organizer full of new grade 8 hardware from Bolt Depot, no more hunting and pawing in dirty boxes. It's an a frame on casters, so it has 140 bins and I can wheel it out of the way when needed.

i bought a small parts storage box i think its craftsman that had enough bins in it to separate 1/4, 5/16, 3/8 and 1/2 nuts bolts and washers. the normal sizes i use because i was tired of never having hardware, ill expand as times goes on. i do what was suggested above, we have stores locally called north 40 similar to tractor supply and they sell by the pound, i keep grade 5 on hand for every day use. every couple trips in i grab a bag and throw various handfuls of different sizes of nuts and bolts and build up my supply. much cheaper than a regular big box or hardware store

I bought a few Harbor Freight assortments and also like 5 pounds of assorted fasteners from the local mom and pop hardware store. I haven't had to drive to a hardware store for fasteners in like 5 years. I do pick some up occasionally to add to my stash.

I picked up the same inexpensive assortment. 2 actually, as I wanted extra cases to organize misc screws, nails, etc. that were not in the kit.

I use the Dewalt, Storehouse and Harbor Freight plastic storage containers with dividers and clear tops to store my stuff. I have about 24 of them for nuts, bolts, screws, washers, hardware, electrical, etc. I started out with one of those small nut and bolt and washer assortments with the metal divider box. If you don't have a bucket of hardware to sift through (and maybe sort), they are a good way to go so you are not constantly running to the hardware store. You still will sometimes, though.

Maybe it's a regional thing but around here (Western North Carolina) the big box stores must think fine thread hardware is not used anywhere. Most of the stuff I play with has very little coarse thread.

Yep, here too. Lowes or HD is my last resort. They have a lot of coarse thread stuff which I stay away from and a lot of ungraded bolts. I am fine in most cases w/ grade 5 but will not use ungraded except in an emergency. My local ACE hardware has a pretty good selection of quality stuff so they are first choice. McM-C has it all but I have been screwed on shipping a couple of times. They don't make it real obvious which warehouse your stuff is coming from and each warehouse will charge it's own shipping. I called once and got a refund after explaining that I had only ordered the drill bits because I figured they would get thrown in the box w/ the other stuff that I actually needed. The second time it happened I got no refund so now I call to check shipping before sending the order.

Rural King has them by the pound. The cheap stuff as well as higher grades. If it was a really critical application I might go elsewhere but for most things they are cheap and have a good selection. It's a local chain in the midwest.

I have ordered from McMaster a couple times and shipping has been reasonable but I hate that they don't show you what it will be when you order on line. I usually only use them on more specialty stuff that I can't get easily elsewhere. They have an awesome inventory.

Just keep an eye on Craigslist. I have gotten a bunch of free nuts and bolts from there. One time I got 3 of the metal containers that has the 4 or 5 drawers containers with dividers and a lid from fastnel filled with nuts and bolts like a full set up. Ew the kit was like 4K but I got it for free I just had to get it that day and remove a built in bench that was in my way of getting to them. If you want to buy something expect to pay some money for a good assortment that is depending on how big of an assortment you want. I never go to homedepot for nuts bolts or screws other then a couple random specialty stuff once in a blue moon.
