Not in buckets, but in Folgers coffee cans. Separated by large/ small, washers, bolts, nuts, hose clamps, lags, carriage, wood, etc. Most bought at garage sales by the can or bucket. Easy to find what you want if you dump a partial can into a box top and pick through to locate. I’m so thrifty that i have made washers out of pennies. A penny size washer is now 20 cents @ Ace.

i had buckets and buckets of nut and bolts. I threw them all away except for a god handful of what I use. Now if i need hardware, lowes is up the road.

i was storing bolts for over twenty years. twenty five gallon buckets take up alot of room

I bought some bolt bins/racks probably 15 years ago. I couldn't imagine having to go through buckets or cans for bolts anymore.

Not saying I didn't do that in the past, just that its a memory I've since pushed out of my mind, lol.

Similar to these are what I bought:

I hauled 400+ pounds of nuts, bolts and screws to recycling last year. All of it came from metal coffee cans I had hauled around for over 30 years. Most of it was used and a lot of it was beyond further use. I always kept it as a "just in case". It was not organized and I usually couldn't find what I needed. I now have 20 HF cases and have slowly built up a good selection of hardware. A lot of it is from Tractor Supply but I've also bought bulk from other suppliers. It has made my life a lot easier.

Got a Tractor Supply nearby? They sell them by the pound. They have SAE grade 8 & 5. Fill a bag with whatever you need.

Thanks for posting this. I stopped by Tractor supply and started putting together an assortment. I started with a decent assortment of 1/4, 5/16, and 3/8 grade 8 course thread for about $16.

Now I have to make labels for my bins.
Unfortunately my bins are too small for these pro labels. https://www.ablelabel.com/documents/Able-Label-Bin-Price-List-Order-Form.pdf

Went to tractor supply also for some regular grades 1/4 to 3/8 for now. Sizes 1/2” to 2” length, 10 each ran me $30 with washers and nuts. Not bad at all.

Will have to go back and get some others, but a great start.

When I need nuts and bolts, washers and et ceterra my first stop is an Industrial Surplus Store where they are sold by the pound. K-Surplus in National City, CA. I never buy "just enough", I always throw in some more for good measure.

I have a bank of drawers labled by Thread Size and if I want a 5/16 -18 bolt I often find what I need, same for 1/4" 3/8 and half inch. Nuts and washers too.

One job I hated as a kid was sort through can of old bolts to try and find on that fits.

I don't have enough space in my garage for a full size nut and bolt storage bin, so I just have USS and SAE nuts and washers from 1/4 to 1/2. Still very handy.

I also have a good selection of #6, #8 and #10 machine screws and sheet metal screws. Sheet metal screws work good in wood or with plastic anchors.

I purchased 2 of the sets off Amazon and they came with nice metals storage trays. What I learned is that most of the preconfigured sets do not come with long bolts. I ended up purchasing a handful of really long bolts in each thread size and I will just cut off the excess if necessary.
