Nut, Bolt, Fastener Storage...

Fellas -

I did a search, reviewed some old threads, and could still use a bit of input before I pull the trigger.

I am a bit of a packrat when it comes to nuts, bolts, washers, etc. I rarely throw any away unless they are clearly junk. I've parted out a few cars, and usually keep all the old fasteners, so I have many hundreds of things.

They've been sitting in a toolbox, unsorted, for years. Now it's time to get rid of the toolbox, and work on some organization.

I am looking for closed drawers with dividers or something similar. Not really interested in the open bin concept; dividers will allow me to tailor a drawer to the specific hardware (long bolts, for example).

I like the price on plastic, but I don't know how long it will hold up with fairly heavy items.

Here's what I'm looking at: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B006WQPLOG/?tag=atomicindus08-20

It's not cheap, but it's sturdy, should give me enough room for metric and SAE nuts/bolts, washers, screws, nails, etc. And if I run out of room, it's modular, so I can just get another one.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Scott

I built this. Works well but ended up using the radio shack cabinet I got for the less specialized stuff and keep odd ball parts in the little bins as well as misc screws brad nails ect.

It is easy to modify to fit the number of bins or size of bins you need

This is what I made. Used a sheet of 1/2" plywood for the back. Used 1"x6" for the shelves. Bins are from Menards, fairly frequently they come on sale. I have used address labels to label the bins with the contents "G8 3/8"x2" Bolt" or whatever.

I used the same Durham cabinet for hardware, works really well. But it is 12" deep so if you put it on a shelf you loss space behind or you have space in front and you will pile stuff in front of the drawers...
Durham makes the same cabinet in 17" deep. This will give you more cubic inches of storage and longer drawers for the long bolts.

Zoro has a good price on it and 20%-30%+ sale makes it even better.

Those Durham units look good ... and buying add-ons as required is a definite bonus.

Way too much money for me tho ..

I went with one of these for $80 ... and filled it up with 4" dia recycled dogfood cans ... 35 to a drawer

yeah yeah ... round pegs in a square hole waste space ... but it was cheap ..

No labelling ... just open the appropiate drawer ... look in the tins ... and grab the one thats needed.

Scott, those are basically the same as the one's I'm using, but being a cheap *******, I bought mine at a local auction to the tune of $20 per section.... Didn't know they were that pricey....

Robert, you are saving stuff worth storing though,,, hahaha We save some hardware but it has to be special or hard to replace, large bolts in good shape but all that little stuff from 1/4 to most 1/2 gets tossed, saving is a mess and a lot of it isn't any good anyway.
We are in it so much dont even have drawers.

Something like that durham organizer might be good for a shop that stocks a lot of the same sizes and has the money/space for a wall of them. I dont know what your hardware assortment looks like, but it sounds like you have relatively small quantities of a large variety of fasteners. Cant see those large drawers being ideal for this.

I personally like the compartmentalized cases, whether they are metal or plastic. Mine are the plastic Plano cases and they are holding up well. When I started sorting mine, I used small, clear disposable cups. This helped me get a good idea of the number of compartments I was going to require as well as general size.

Robert, you ****!

Might want to try Craigslist. This is just one example. This is bigger but similar to something I have.

I swear, stuff like that never comes up on Craigslist in my area.

Can I try?

I also considered those Durham units.

When I started adding up the price for all the pieces I'd want it was getting scary. Add to that that many of the reviews mention the lid latches breaking. So, I reconsidered.

Now I'm waiting to land a deal one something good through CL or auction. The deals are out there. They just take time to find.

Also, to me, cleaning up and repurposing something used is more fun.

That's a fair bit of storage. Nicely done.

Thanks, Kevin. The deeper one is probably the one for me.

I'm in Italy. Not sure I will be able to find old card file cabinets. Would be difficult to find space for one, too.

Thanks

I am actually quite careful. I save it if its clearly good. I don't stock every flavor but what I really use, a few grade 2 and grade 5, only random fine for repairs same for grade 8 and metric.
I whize thru a pail of old stuff, strip new or expensive items but regular bolts/nuts that are small go in to the trash and we buy a handful of new.
I am not sifting thru used 1/4 20 nuts, small hardware replacement is part of regular service.

I have almost the same setup but I ran mine lengthwise rather than vertical. That way I have storage underneath and the top as well. When I was setting up my shop I was able to negotiate with my Lawson rep and he threw the cabinets in with my bolt/nut order. I ordered the basics and then added to them over the years as needed.

I also use the Lawson style drawers that have the small 2"x2" divided sectionals. The type that fit four drawers to a section, they work great for smaller items.

I am all for saving money but I am looking to save 50$ in the next hour or 2 instead of 50 cents.
I limit the used queer screw collection to some stuff in a fishing tackle box, got nothing against saving something where practical and I collect things we do use.
My Dad was trying to rig something and going to save a rusty license plate screw,, we got new ones.
I look for deals on drillers and collect them when its practical and do pocket a few if its easy and we commonly use them.
I have another rack that deals expressly with deck screws which I stock by the box. I spend extra for them and never use multi purpose or drywall stuff. I went to the well today and looks like the 3 inch was pretty dry.

Tried to order a Durham metal storage 007-95 unit from Amazon. There were 4 vendors who sold it, and only one would ship to FPO/APO. And after I ordered it, I got an e mail telling me that my order was canceled because the supplier couldn't ship it here. Sh*t. Not sure why; it's within the APO/FPO limits on weight, and should be on size, too, but some folks just don't want to deal with APO/FPO.

Will see if I can find one on eBay.
