Well I jumped in and invested a bunch of cash in hardware for the shop today.
I'm stocking 1/4",5/16",3/8",7/16",1/2". In grades 2,5,8. Bolts in sizes from 3/4"-4" but not in every size.

I've got the nuts, lock washers, and flat washers. In these for now (and may keep them.

I'm thinking somethink like this for the bolts

I'm not using the wall mount for it, I was going to build something like this to hold them:

Anyway, what are you guys using? Please don't tell me to go buy a StrongHold for $3000. I'm not keeping more than 2 hand fulls of each size of nuts and washers, and about the same in bolts. Thanks guys Keith

I've got a regular bolt bin now, metal, 40 holes. I am considering going to the style you are looking at. It looks easier to look for bolts than what I have now. As for as the bolts, I wouldn't keep grade 2, to me its just not worth it. The grade mostly used is 5, but it is nice to have a few grade 8 around.

Local auction purchase, I believe they were $20 per set, so about 120 for what I have standing there... came with plenty of dividers...

MP&C's are awesome (of course....!). Are all those boxes full of new nuts and bolts like that one??

I use the plastic ones as shown by the OP. Most of mine are filled with used stuff I collect and sort, then I have a rack for new stuff I use a lot of in builds.

I have some of those red/blue bins on shelves, under the work bench, behind doors.

My new nuts, bolts, and fastners are kept in the red drawers
The blue drawers down low are for used hardware
The long narrow drawers are for longer bolts.
and the plastic pull down drawers are for misc small stuff like springs hair pin clips electrical conectors etc.
The red cabinets are for spray paint, liquids, polishing pads and bars

I have used this set up for 25+ years. I started with the baby food jars back when I couldn't afford anything else. The bolt bins came from my late father in laws hardware store. Each bin is steel & removable.

Here's what I just finished putting together.

I re-purposed an old CM intermediate box I had just gathering dust.......

Imagestool00001.jpg

And then spent more time than I want to admit trying to figure out how to lay out bins, then cutting and folding each one out of some poster board I had.

Top drawer for 1/4x20

Imagestool00002.jpg

Next is 5/16x18

Imagestool00003.jpg

Then 3/8x16

Imagestool00004.jpg

The bottom I just kinda threw together to hold some mis stuff

I still need to finish gathering the rest of the hardware I want to keep on hand but at least now I have a place to keep it all.

I was looking hard at Blue print cabinets and almost pulled the trigger on one but the wife shoot that down being "this time of year"

I may still do that at a later date when my needs grow and funds are available.

However, this little thing is enough to where I managed to get bins made for every comon size and style of hardware I use most often.

While I only have Grade 8 hex head bolts right now, (sizes from 1/2" to 2") I have room for allen head socket cap bolts, allen button head bolts, SS nuts bolts and washers and SS allen head bolts.

I would have to add up my wish lists for the hardware kits but I think it's pretty close to 3000 peices that I can stuff just in the top 3 drawers.

For reference sake, the smallest couple of sizes in each assortment are 50 count, then 25 count once you get to 1 1/4"s long. The Nylon lock nuts and sereated lock nuts you see in the back of each drawer (the silver colored stuff) are 100 count each.

No, I have a 5 gallon bucket full of old used stuff. The new stuff stays organized.

This is what I have as well.. Only I have two 5 gallon pails - one metric, one SAE..

The organized fasteners are in yellow plastic bins from HF on one of their racks. I need to expand though and get another rack.

GR8 or specialty fasteners typically get stored in a cleaned out clear peanut butter jar and put on the shelf.

My old neighbour used the "Two Pail System" One 5gal pail for standard and one for metric... dump them out, find what you need, shovel back in... and they raced cars, so this happen often.

Hey my old bolt buckets have saved my bacon many times in the middle of the night...

Even a good friend of mine who used to ridicule me over the bolt buckets has found value in them and now is a defender of the bucket... :D
