Nyloc and lock washer on the same bolt

Hello Folks

I'm working on a 68 Mustang that someone installed rear disc brakes on. Seems they didn't know if the wanted to use lock washer or a Nylon Insert Lock Nut. The bolt is .150 from the nylon and the lock washer is .150 thick.

Guess they liked the lock washer better.

If those nuts in the first pic are tight, the nyloc insert never had a thread cut into it. They're good as new so use the lock washers and new nuts and save the nyloc nut for another project.

Brakes are potentially high temps and no place for a nyloc anyways.. I'd replace with hardened nut and lockwasher.

Why not get rid of the Nyloc and standard lock washer and use these?

I call them 'communist' nuts.

+1 to the high temperature bit... I like jet nuts. Safety wire also a good thing.

I agree. Safety wire is probably the best overall solution and is required in many racing organizations. For street use it's not necessary but if you want to try it you can buy a fixture to drill nuts for wire.

BTW - The original pic looks like a hack job. I don't think I would feel safe in a car that relied on a standard lock washer or nyloc nut to keep by brakes on. They are great and have their place - but not the brakes of a vehicle.

I'd use Loctite.

I would use a Grade 8 (metric 10.9) nut and bolt set and use some Blue Loctite on the threads. Then torque to spec.

I wouldn't go with a Red Loctite as it will require heat to loosen the locking material.

They are on a grade 8 bolts. Seems this whole car has "things" just not quite correct.

I would check the other brakes too. Stuff like this makes you wonder if the PO was just having a bad day, or if that was his MO.
Make sure you don't have a quarter or some other coin jammed in the fuse block.
