Nylon nut identification

I have been spending some time on the web trying to figure out how to identify the grade of Nyloc / Nylon insert lock nuts.

I have seen grade 8 nyloc's that have 2 lines on the outer edge of the hex, And grade 8 usually has the yellow dichromate zinc coating

I know how to identify the grade of standard hex nuts or "full hex nuts" by looking at the dots and lines on the face of the nut. This does not seem to apply to nylon lock nuts.

Seems that the color of the nylon insert identifies the manufacture, so that is not it.

Grade 5 nylon lock nuts seem to be very rare, but i do see that Mcmaster-carr sells them.

Can anyone find a chart or anything that shows a standard to identify these.
Thought someone might be in the fastener industry here.

Thanks for any help.

Color doens't have anything to do with the grade. I have bins full of all kinds of Lawson brand bolts and none of them are any color other than the standard zinc/chrome finish.

I also have a bunch of grade 5 bolts with the yellow chromate finish.

Every grade eight nyloc that I've used had the standard six slashes on the nylon side of the nut.

Are these the 6 slashes that you are talking about.

Grade 2 nylocs also have these 6 slashes. I think that is just a crimping procedure that some manufactures are using for the nylon.

Stainless steel nylocs also have these 6 slashes and they are not grade 8.

These are not just generic pictures because i have ss nylocs with these slashes and know they are ss because a magnet will not stick to them.

As far as color. I was just saying that grade 8 is usually the yellow color. I know they can be any color. I know the color of the nylon is a manufactures identification color.

I am aware that grade 8 bolts have 6 slashes on the head

Just trying to figure out how the industry marks grade 2, 5 and 8 nyloc's. So far still can't figure it out.

thanks

The marks in those pics are "crimping marks" and have nothing to do with grade identification. They are part of the assembly process to hold in the nylon, some manufacturers use them and some don't. There are 2 different grade markings: 6 dots on the shoulder of the nut or 6 dashes on the side of the nut.

This is like attaching some intrinsic value to a Garrett Snuff bottle with "foe dots"

(That's "Four" to you non-southerners)

To the best of my knowledge any lock nut with a nylon insert will be grade 2 only as the metal cannot be any stronger or the crimping process for the nylon insert cannot be done. All of the higher strength lock nuts will be all metal with a distorted top. http://www.mcmaster.com/#hex-locknuts/=jjnfiv

Agree, Ditto... Look for the circles or dots, not the crimp.

In order to have a gr 8 stop nut you must get a "stover nut". It will be deformed at the top. My experience with these is that you should always install them with either lubrication or neversieze to minimize damage to the threads on the bolt.

There are grade 8 nylon insert locknuts.

There are no nylon insert locknuts rated grade 8 on that page that I see. There are other types of locknuts rated grade 8, but they are different type.

Best answer, I only know of grade 2 nylon lock nuts. We use nylon lock nuts on our products and I've never seen anything rated above 2.

from what I have seen in searching for an answer, Nylocs come in three Grades. 2,5, and 8. But they come either in Zinc plating or in Galvanized plating and a SST Nyloc will be natural. I can't find anything on how to identify Grades though.
