you just need thread on the bolt to tighten it so it will spin when you pull the trigger. you'll still need the "cup" to protect the shaft and the bolt from digging into the ground - and most likely to take up the non-threaded length of the shaft.

as to whether it will work. dunno. It would have to last an awfully long time to be worth $25. I have a lot of obstructions so I'm pretty sure I'd break one end off in a time or two and then I'd have an unbalanced trimmer shaking all over the place. And I bet it would be bit tougher on trees (for those occasional oopsies) than string... For me, I'd pass for those reasons.
