OLD TRUTH 3/4 Drive Ratchet: Any estimated year of production ?

Hello GJ,

I've been on here, A-A, the web, and have only found one similar ratchet to this on "WorthPoint" and the seller there thought it was a "prototype" ?

I believe the Worth point example and this one here have a few minor differences in appearance, but I couldn't tell from those photos due to shadows, glare, etc.

This one here was bought new by the owner of a large farm in Oregon City, Oregon and was gifted to my seller, who is of the same family. It worked on said farm its whole life, and has lived safely in a barn for many years up until very recently.

I appreciate any help or leads to its vintage !

TIA,

Shawn

I’m not sure I understand what you’re asking. TRUTH tools were made in Mankato Minnesota. There is a thread for TRUTH in the sticky. I think 3bay posted a 3/4” drive ratchet from another brand that was near identical. I think it was a New Britain ratchet. Did Nee Britain make it for TRUTH or was it the other way around. Who knows...
TRUTH made loads of drive tools. So, I’m not seeing the mystery in this particular ratchet.
:dunno:

I did post it on the Truth area. I only found photos of the larger rats with the selector switches, and different style handes. The WP example (which after closer inspection is the same rat) had no known year of approxomate manufacture.

I'll get it figured out. Thanks for all the feedback and your time.

The mystery is simply an approximate year of manufacture, and I thank you OTG for your input. I'll get more research done. ThanK you all for your time.

Apologies on my end. Reading is fundamental and apparently I'm struggling with that today. Yes. OTG has is right. Likely 40s manufacture. That's a neat ratchet by the way. You could probably keep it in the car with you to defend yourself! It looks pretty stout!
Unless you nail a set in one fell swoop like 3Bay just did (apparently), that would be a tough one to piece together.

UAIU,

You Sir are a gentleman! But YOU were correct in zapping me ,because I only changed my topic title AFTER you had called me out. I sincerely appreciate your apology and kind reply, as you made my day!

The Truth Ratchet story is a cool one. Nearly a month ago now (since finding the SK Socketchest) I had reached out to a very good GJ pal (who is UTR but a great old iron nut and friend) to see if he had any vintage SK items that might fill out the Socketchest. He had some very nice things (1/4 and 1/2) but the catalog list was abit different from what he had. At that time I didnt know the differences.

Anyoo...my friend told me that he has a very old and very nice 3/4 drive Truth set, but that he is missing a Truth 3/4 rat. He has in its place an SK 3/4 rat that is cadmium, wartime, and patent pending. He made me a deal that if I find him any Truth 3/4, he will trade me across for the SK.

I've been looking casually on and off with zero luck. Until last night ! I found a super neat seller who had a handful of old tools and antique glass items. The Truth was being offered within a hodgepodge of old sockets, breaker bars and wrenches. They were advertising it for a certain amount for the whole lot. I simply messaged the seller and asked if I would offend them by buying just the Truth, and for a very nice, but reasonable price. They replied immediately with a YOU BET.

I had the seller send it directly to my buddy's house, and it was his birthday yesterday, so it was very cool timing and luck all around. The SK rat is a nice bonus for my slowly growing stash!

I figure it would be 6 to 10 months yet before I located a Truth. Not one night ! My friend has been hunting for one for awhile now. The best part is that Lugz referred me to the new thread where 3Bay just bought a Truth 3/4 Vintage barn sale set with the same rat. I sent my friend those pictures and the box he has is identical (except color ) and the sockets and 1 extension are the same as his. The smaller ones are styled abit differently, but match the rat just fine either way.

The one I located will pretty much look right at home in my friends kit. He is a happy camper ,and it was sure exciting telling him the news !. Thanks for listening!

Stay safe, Shawn

Allfast, I’m not much help with the date, but did just find the set. I will post it in the Truth thread when I get a chance. There’s a strange forge mark on the beam, which also appears on other ratchets, but I have to look into that some.

Yes, also looks similar to this 3/4 NB female rat. Maybe it would be easier to find a date for that.

You mentioned this seller was in Oregon City ... that's just 10 minutes away from my place in the home of P&C Tools - Milwaukie, Or. I don't suppose there's a listing you could point me to? I don't recall every seeing the 3/4" drive set for sale on my usual haunts.

3BAY, You did get a nice set,and the rats have that heavy ribbed edge beam which is cool. My friend is a good sleuth and will probably get it dialed in.

Riley, I don't recall how I worded it, but to clarify, the rat and tools were bought and stayed with the same family in OCO ,and my seller (who inherited the items) is in WA State. The ad is NLA. I reached out...they haveike 4 really tattered sockets and weathered plomb sliding t bar.....all nothing of great quality If I hear back I'll send you a link. Thanks for the interest! Shawn
