O-Rings With Keyless Chuck

I recently got this keyless chuck. It comes with two spare o-rings. What are the o-rings for ? I can't figure it out.

metal pin goes in 1/2 drive socket adapter. oring goes around/in groove of adapter to hold pin in place.
