I've had one of these for a few months now. I use it with my Android phone and love it. A couple of weeks ago when my girlfriend's Mazda 3 popped a CEL, I used it to check it, diagnose a dirty EGR valve, and clear the fault after cleaning it. Definitely worth $10.

The app is called Torque. I've used mine to read codes on a lot of cars and so far it's worked on everything. I think I may have had to Google manufacturer specific codes on a few occasions.

Also torque can do a live data display for various sensors. On some cars not all the sensors will work. For example I was using it just the other day to read o2 sensors signals on a Lexus. It would not read the sensors, but the data is there and I ended up using a different scan tool which would read them.

This is a great value for the money, but not a hot deal.

I've bought several of this exact model. They used to be around $20, but now are pretty easy to get for under $10.

I suggest paying a dollar or two more to get a shorter model which is less likely to be knocked out of the socket by your knee. Hmmm, actually you can get the short model for $9.01, less than the product linked above. Do a search for "Bluetooth OBD2", buy-it-now sorted by price+shipping.

What software should be included to make this work properly? Not just the demo versions either.

As mentioned above, Torque Pro. I am running it on my wife's former Android phone.

There are some iOS versions out there, but they either require their own proprietary adapter ($$$), or require jailbreaking your phone to use the Bluetooth OBD-II adapters, and then the apps themselves are rather expensive and are rarely updated.

This is one of the best tools you can have in my opinion. I have a small scanner i received as a gift. However it couldn't pull abs codes. I had a abs speed sensor go, so I bought one. Thinking it was cheaper than buying a new scanner, and if it didn't work i would still have a new toy. As Edd China would say...It worked a treat! With both apps mentioned below you can pull abs and airbag codes. So I have $15 in the adapter and $10 in apps and I can do anything a lot of pricey scanners can. Plus I can access real time info from an amazing amount of widget options. *Edit* I forgot to mention if you get one with a cd, use it at your own risk as it is rumored to have malware on it.

I have the newer smaller version of the Elm. I got it from amazon.

I use Torque Pro and Car Gauge Pro. Both are pretty similar but Car Gauge has specific pids for:

✮ Ford (1996-2008) - Check/Clear Faults, Self Test, KOEO, KOER and Enhanced Data 1230 PIDS (ISO, PWM, CAN)
✮ Nissan (2001-2007) - Check/Clear Faults, Self Test and Enhanced Data 634 PIDS (KWP2000 - ECM, TCM, ABS, BCM)
✮ GM (1996-2007) - Check/Clear Faults and Enhanced Data 189 PIDS (VPW Powertrain)
✮ Toyota (2000-2006) - Enhanced Data 150 PIDS (ISO - Powertrain) + Read/Clear Faults (ISO Airbag)
✮ Kia (1996-TBD) - Enhanced Data (ISO Powertrain)
