Just got a new AUTEL 609 on EBay for $89 shipped. Does ABS but not air bags which the 619 does.

I am thinking about buying an OBD2 reader. I am looking for suggestions of what would be a good one to get for DIY use. I think I would like to get a good one for home use, I am not wanting to buy one like they use at an auto repair shop that would cost too much. Maybe a higher end one for DIY but not a professional one.

I see your in southeast MO.. What parts..

Recommendation on software? I have auto engunity and don't even use it. I hate it

Not that I am reading.

If memory serves, OBD2 doesn't define anything non-emissions related. Everything else like ABS, air bags, etc. are essentially vendor extensions. IMO it's highly worth it for hobbyists to invest in some manufacturer specific tools.

Often the worst-case scenario is pirated dealer/factory tools, but generally there are some decent third party tools a well. On VWs and BMWs you can do a ton of stuff with a cheapie K/L/CAN cable.

I think mine was $25 off ebay. It reads codes and erases them easily. Basically any is better than none. A lot of guys don't have them and have to schlep up to Autozone to get their codes read.

Mine doesn't do ABS stuff, though.

A code reader gets you in the ballpark at best, but you can't do any testing or have data streams. That's where a scanner shines over it.

Having the code is a start because you can pull the logic/trouble tree out of the shop manual and see what order you should go in to try to solve the problem.

I found that a scanner isn't that much more that a code reader. I can't do everything with my scanner, but for what I paid for it, I can always flip it and if you think about it, if it saves you the first time you use it, it paid for itself.

I finally decided what to buy. After reading all the comments and doing a lot of research on the internet, I decided to buy the Actron CP9680. I want to thank everybody for their comments. I got a good deal for the scanner on eBay. Will try it out Thursday.
