I've been looking for a good jack for a bit, tired of my little trolly jack. I was spending more time jacking the car than it takes to change the oil.
Found this and picked it up for $30. Reading Elroys thread and I'm looking forward to restoring this to its former glory. This was a home-owner jack, not abused.

Jacked up my car and let it sit for an hour. A little oil was leaking out around the packing nut(I'm pretty sure). Should I just try tightening it up? New seal? If so, whats the difficulty in replacement?
Waiting for Hiball to chime in here ;)

Looks good.. Big fan of the T-handle, it makes it easier to position the jack. As far as the leak, its impossible to determine whether tightening the compression nut will solve your issue but its worth a shot.

I have the same jack. Yours is in really mint condition the Caution sticker is still on yours and your main plates look really straight. It's really nice having the release knob vs rotating the whole jack handle

Well, gave the compression nut almost a full turn, still leaked.. maybe even worse now. What parts will I need to seal up that end?

I'd say more than likely the issue resides with the main ram piston seal, especially since you initially noticed the leak after it was under load.

Well, here's were we stand now.
Mostly disassembled. I can see degreasing and prepping for paint is going to be a big challenge.

This is my leak. Most definitely leaking through the packing. Not sure if its bad packing or a seal somewhere underneath.

Got up this morning and decided to splint the tank. The tank nut really wasn't that bad. Stuck the assembly in a vice and a 14" pipe wrench broke it loose. Lots of sludge in there!
To be honest, I really know jack about how this little hydraulic jack works. I'm just kind of figuring it out as I go, as I do most projects. I find most things aren't as intimidating as they seem.

Another thing to note, My jack only has 1 return spring, and it seems to be a replacement. Although not necessary, if anyone has scrapped one of these and has the springs, I'd be grateful for them!

I spent the day doing some body work. Broke it down as far as I wanted and started stripping. Did the small parts on the bench grinder and hand drill with wire wheels. The bigger case parts were done with an angle grinder and wire cup. Everything was taken to bare metal, two coats of primer and two to three coats of Rustolium Safety Red I had around. I would have preferred the original orange but didn't want to put any more money into this than necessary and the red is cheap.
I found the lower support bar on mine to be broken as I've seen on the other rebuild threads. Not sure what I'll do about that yet. I just ground off the end and drove it out with a punch and hammer.

Paint drying, more to do tomorrow.

My tag cleaned up well for a jack built in the 40-50's..

I took the opportunity today to finish painting and throw all the pieces in the oven for a few hours to cure the paint.
Just finished greasing and putting it all back together. Still need to tackle the handle and the pump. A local hydraulic shop is sourcing the parts so I can keep my money local.
Here's where it sits tonight. I was planning to paint the saddle white but not sure if its worth the trouble.

In this picture a few inches behind the front wheel you will see the empty hole where there was a stud that spanned the frame. Mine was broken and removed, it's broken on a few other O'boy threads I've seen as well. It's just a bar that had the ends peen'd over to hold it in place. At first I was thinking it was structural but now I see it's purpose is to stop the saddle assembly from dropping so low it hits the frame(which you can see it resting on the frame in the picture).

If you have access to a lathe, or a good die, I'd get a piece of rod the right diameter, thread the ends, and install it with acorn nuts. It'll look like it grew there. You're doing a great job.

I was thinking maybe a peice of allthread with a pipe between the two halves. I like the idea of the acorn nuts!

Thanks for the comments everyone :) My work week just started so I wont be getting much done for a few days.

Got my seals from the local Hydro shop installed tonight. Works well! Waiting for warmer weather to finish the painting on the handle and the saddle. Hope I make 'Ol Elroy proud, his builds were my inspiration. Held the weight of my car for a few hours with no leaks! Very happy, this jack is ready for another 60 years.
I'll update when it's finished, here's a sneak peek :)
Thanks to Elroy and Hiball for the help on this.

I took care of the broken cross bar this morning. You can see the old one that was broken on one end and my new set-up. This bar keeps the jack from lowering too far and bottoming out, it now rests nicely on the nuts when in the lowest position. I'll need to pick up some acorn nuts to finish the look.

Rotated my tires and changed the oil, it was obvious that no paint was going to last long on the saddle so I decided to strip it and leave it bare to match the pump. Touched up the paint in a few areas now that I'm done flipping and building on it.
The jack works well!

Don't forget some rubber bumpers to keep that bar from scratching that purty paint. :lol_hitti

Looks good.. I kinda like the Bare metal look on the Pump in contrast to the saddle.

Thanks. I like the bare metal too, the wheels, saddle and pump. Everything has a coating of hydraulic oil so I'm not too worried about it rusting, plus it'll be in a dry garage. Still need to finish the handle, I was thinking black bar with red knob and gearbox.

All done. I don't expect it to look this pretty for long. Used it a few times in the last week, it's great to have a nice jack that works well and doesn't leak!

Hi there! Nice work on the o'boy!
I have what looks to be the same model that I bought 4-5 years ago for $15 on craigslist. It has been awesome and while I've always enjoyed it I never knew it had such admiration from folks.

Mine developed a leak that has gotten worse quickly and is now pretty much unusable... It leaks from the back left where the plunger spring thingy is. In fack, "leak" doesn't quite do it justice, gushes would be a better word.

Could someone help direct me on how to get my jack operational again. Do these have repair manuals or diagrams or anything?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

More than likely the pump piston cup is compromised, Here is a good thread showing a rebuild in detail.
