We are having a special on 40’s at this time. $1400 + tax/delivery (approx $450). 20’s are $1400 + tax/delivery (approx $450) As for permits, I would call these “steel storage/cargo container”

Dam that delivery charge is cheep! All the way from CA to MI for $450??

I was wondering the same thing. Maybe they have multiple locations. The quote I got on a 40' out of Dallas (about 75 miles away) was $2400 plus $350 delivery. If I could buy one for the price quoted on the list it would save me $900.:headscrat

When I was buying containers about 5 years ago I called just about everyone that had them to check on prices and delivery fees. Lots of them had ads all over the country and had contracts to sell / ship them from the closest location to your area. They don't always come from ports. For example we live in Kentucky now and people that sell them here almost always pick them up in Louisville to deliver them. I was up in Louisville a month or so ago and saw a huge stack of them near one of the railroad yards there. I was told they end up with a lot of them in Louisville because they have two Ford plants there and they get lots of parts shipped to them in containers. In Michigan I'd think you could find a good deal on containers for the same reason. I bought the last of my containers in 2002 and I think I paid about $150.00 to have it delivered 100 miles.

The prices for shipping containers have always seemed kinda high to me especially when you add the delivery charge. You can get a place to come put up a 20x20 carport type thing for about $800.00 around here. Add some vinyl siding and concrete and you end up with better useable space for about the same price.

I think those numbers are for the LA side of the bay only.
The don't include the Long Beach side.
Together I am sure it is the busiest in the US, but I think Belgum is the Busiest in the world.
In any case, there are a lot of those boxs out there.
And they sure have changed the way the world handles cargo.

BTW, they do not always make it to where they should.
A little searching will find you videos of them getting washed overboard during storms.
And, depending on what is in them, they don't always sink.
Since the ships all follow the same GPS guided routes, there have been cases where the next guy in line has hit one washed off the guy in front of him.

^^^I thought the Port of LA is generally considered Long Beach (its own city) and San Pedro (the town in the City of LA) together. Both in LA County.

Maybe I've just heard Los Angeles as short-hand for both. Come to think of it, I've seen on shipping docs "Long Beach", so what do I know.

This is kind of along the lines of what I've got in my head for a "cabin in the woods" setup. One of the containers would be the kitchen/living room area and the other would be the sleeping quarters with a deck in between. The main thing I haven't worked out yet is how to make the carport roof and the deck capable of being hidden away for when I'm not at the "cabin". Luckily, the money flow for this is a LONG way away, so maybe by the time I have the money, I'll have figured out the logistics of everything.

If you do some google searching there is a guy who did just this... he made a wicked hunting/outdoors cabin in the woods with them.

These shipping companies have ports all over the country. They might be already hauling cargo to Michigan with a container and instead of bringing the container back they just sell if if they have a buyer.

Also, a lot of these companies have multiple ports... like Detroit has a huge train port with containers... thousands of them. Toledo water port has more than you can count... then we have several large ports in Michigan that always houses thousands of these steel containers.

So most likely they just drop ship from a nearest port.

I've been thinking for a while now of getting a 20 or maybe even a 40' for work... would be great just to store extra bulky items and it's super secure.

A friend has a 40ft shipping container trailer and I have a CDL. I just need a truck and I'd be in business.:) I don't know how they work the crane service for load/unloading though.

fascinating stuff and probably a viable alternative unless you have draconian zoning.

Mine both came on a roll back trailer. I pushed them and pulled them exactly where I wanted them with my bull dozer ( but the truck driver got them real close). No cranes needed.

When I worked at a public school, we used them during construction. They are 20 or 40 feet long, 8 feet wide and 8 feet tall. Taller units are available. Around here they cost about $3000 for a good one, or rent for about $100 a month. Very good storage, air and water tight and vandal resistant.

I looked around for these this past spring, trying to decide on a new shed, addition, container, etc.
Everyone always said how cheap they are. Here in NE Ohio, the cheapest I could find was $2600 delivered for a 20'! 40' was around $3500. Doesn't seem cheap to me at all, compared to what I can build a nice looking shed for.
And that was for the 'cheap' one-way container. A 20' return-able container, or whatever they are called, the ones built stronger, heavier and meant to be used twice or more, was something like $5k.

I like them - drop in place and use it - no hassle.
I think a lot has to do with you proximity to a shipping port. In my case , an hour from Baltimore, I got a 40' in decent (not new) shape delivered for around 2600 - 2800 about 9 years ago. It has serevd me well as garden shed / mini workshop.
I know prices keep going up, though.
2 years ago, we bout 3 of them at work for extra storage - 2 40' freshly painted for about 3400 each and a 20' which I have no idea what the boss paid for. The container company even installed a regular man-door in the side of one of the 40's for us.

Id love to build a house out of them, but the zoning is iffy in our area (have to spend a mint on "engineering" stuff to make it possible) and the wife doesn't like the idea too much.....
