ODB2 scanner for non-professional

I'm looking for an ODB2 scanner that I can use on my 2008 Equinox and 2016 Silverado to read and clear engine codes if needed.

I'm not a professional and don't do this for a living. But I do work on my own vehicles as much as I can before having to take it to the pro's.

I tried this ODB2 scanner that connect via your phone, but it wouldn't work on my Google Nexus phone.

So now I'm looking at something like the ANCEL AD310 or the FOXWELL NT301.

What are your thoughts and/or recommendations?

Already tried Torque Lite and purchased Torque Pro as well as a couple other android apps. Doesn't work and the dongle has since been returned. After I had purchased the dongle I found several reviews stating the dongle has issues with the newer nexus/pixel phones - mostly due to running much newer versions of android that most other phones don't run.

Thus my reason looking for a stand alone unit, this way I don't have to worry about what phone I do or don't have.

Go grab the best one you can afford at harbor frieght. Abs and live data should be minimum. they are all about the same to be honest at The consumer level

We really need a budget to help you.

Just read engine codes and data <$50.
Add ABS and SRS +100
Add read all modules +100
Add reset lights, batteries, EPB, etc +50

Or for a little over 500 you can have all that plus bi directional controls on a phone sized device. Want a bigger screen? Then it’s $1000+

What do you want to do?

Budget-wise I'd like to keep it under $125 and prefer Amazon just because I have store credit there. ;)

Autel is used by many pros but they use the high end $1000 scanners. This looks pretty good though.

The AL319 is a good cheap code reader. It does everything anything in this price range does. The big missing feature is graphing but that isn't as useful as it seems with generic OBDII because the refresh rate is usually too slow to catch glitches anyway.

The ML619 will also read some ABS and SRS systems. That can be useful in some cases. I think that is about as good as it gets in your price range. Perhaps someone else will have some more suggestions.

There ya go, $50, turns out the yellow light for a while.

To me, the scanners fall into 3 tiers:

Sub $100 "turn the light out", check IM moniters.
Sub $350 Adds live data with an okay refresh, okay graphing, reads the big 3/4 modules, oil lights, brake/battery service, and very mild bi-directional.
$1000+ - Adds talking to all 70+ modules, bi-directional anything the car has support for, infinite data lines, graphing becomes legitimately useful.
$3000+ - Adds coding.

And if you're advanced enough in diagnostics then a cheap Hantek and a laptop oscilloscope can get you decent wave forms to better see glitches in a sensor.

I've done the phone route, not interested.

I'd rather have a stand alone unit that doesn't need my phone.

Well that's odd. Just use an Ipad then as the "dedicated unit" Have you ever used these bluetooth scanners? They are quite good for the money and purposes you stated.

Or just use an older inactive phone.

And don't forget, a lot of these low priced bluetooth scanners also have a fair amount of diagnostic info right in the program and updated for free. Well worth the $100.

I believe I already mentioned and linked to the scanner I have tried which answers that question. Your recommendation doesn't make any sense, I don't have an iPad so then I'd have to go buy one of those, either new of several hundred dollars or a bit cheaper for something used.

Not interested in anything that needs my phone or tablet (which I don't have anyways). Thanks though.

I have the foxwll 510, I got it with gm software from amazon for 150 when I needed to solve an airbag light. it was great, told me it was the right side sensor, changed it in about 10 min. since you have 2 gms it might be good for you. I recently added the Chrysler software since I traded my avalanche for a ram and my wife has a jeep.

Thanks for all the recommendations and PM's.

This morning I pulled the trigger on the Autel ML629.

Amazon had it listed this morning for $103 lighting deal with an additional $10 off coupon. I had about $90 in gift cards that was given to me which made my out of pocket expense $1.33 shipped.

Reviews looked pretty good so hopefully it will work just fine for my use.

Let us know what you think of this device at some point if you can. I'm in the market for a scan tool in the near future. Bit confusing at first. I just started looking a couple of days ago. A lot of options out there.

That looks like a very good deal. You got a lot of functionality there especially for the big 3.
