My HVAC system is a one-unit system that cools both upstairs and downstairs. I have a large 20"x20"x1" filter upstairs. Downstairs, there is what seems to be a 23.5" x 7.5" x 1" filter, but i can't find any replacement filters! The opening itself is a tad less than 24" (23.8 or so) by a tad less than 8" (~7.9").

I replaced the downstairs filter year-ago with a washable, adjustable type and cut it to size, so I don't have the original filter that came with the house anymore. But I'm getting the sense that these washable filters aren't anywhere near as good as the high-rated Filtrete filters.
But i'm a bit stumped on the size. Does anybody know where I can find a filter that size? I've looked both online as well as in hardware stores...

Index I will check with my suppliers as that does sound like an odd filter size . I will add that actually the washable horse hair filter is actually better ( for your system ) than the high rated 3M filters . The 3M filtrete filters actually filter to well and slow down the airflow in your system which can do more bad than good . I use pleated filters in my system but I use a much more loosely pleated filter such as Flanders or Natural Air ( same company ) . I get them from Home Depot or Lowes in a 3 pack for $6.50 -$7.50 a 3 pack . They are still a pleated filter but the pleats are not as tight as the 3M filters.

The downstairs opening is it a hinged filter rack like upstairs or do you have to remove screws from it to get it off the wall?

I did find these listed on Lowes web site . You may have to special order them but they do list them .

thanks, I appreciate the help.
@rickairmedic: I had no idea that the reduced airflow would actually hurt something. But are the downsides to using a 1500MRP filter?

Yes, the downstairs air return is hinged with two latches on the bottom. I'll try to take a picture of it later tonight.
