Odd Looking Drill Presses

An ad for a local auction posted this photo of a pair of odd looking drill presses that will be sold in September. We are not allowed to view the contents until next month, so I don't have any other photos of them to share. I've never seen anything like this before. They look like they must have come from a production shop of some sort, maybe a machine shop. I know the photo is poor quality, but was wondering if anybody here could possibly tell me what this type of drill press would have been used for??

They look like Burgmaster turret drill presses. They WERE used for production operations back before CNC became the norm. IIRC, the turret would index to the next spindle as soon as the previous spindle retracted.

I believe they are called indexing drills. The ones I saw set up were for gun sights or scope mounts. Clamped the piece, then it drilled,,,rotated the head, thread...rotate, chamfer for a flush screw.

Yes, those are turret drill presses. Kind of a novelty now due to CNC machining. Nifty for the home shop if you do any quantity of "drill, tap countersink" operations.
