Odd looking plomb wf21

Picked it up for $3 , it doesn't look like any other wf21 I can find a picture of. It doesn't look like a ball detent more like a pin detent.

Is it a mutilation of some sort?

Might be an industrial line tool. Some use where the socket could no way, no how slip off the end. Even tight ball detent's will let go in certain situations.

The pin detent's won't release the socket unless you specifically push the recessed-pin in with another tool.

I'd guess that gear is a replacement.

Looking at the end of the handle, it's been modified. It looks like that's where a spinning knob was mounted. My guess is the ratchet was part of the Bell System cable tool.

Good point Plombob, but how did they remove it from the cable tool? Mine appears to be "unremovable." Unless I just haven't looked hard enough for the pin detent........

That's the theory. I haven't broken mine out to see if the handle detaches.

It appears that your ratchet also had a selector/pawl replacement too.

The plate that houses the selector switch/pawl weren't meant to be serviced and were made from the factory as one piece. Your ratchet has a specific selector mated to a standard pawl (for all derivatives of these Plomb made ratchets) for the Craftsman variant of the same ratchet family.

From my experience the WF-21s I've run into have a hemispherical bulb at the end of a non-curved selector.

I haven't seen a WF-21 gear with a circular depression on the face like that.

Now that I look at mine, I don't think it came off of the Bell cable tool. There appears to be no way to remove the rat from the Bell tool...........

It will come apart, you just have to take the tool apart, then remove the ratchet from the shaft that it drives. I have never taken one apart, but I would guess that your ratchet may have had the square drive replaced at some point.

I have a Snap-On 1/4" drive ratchet that is not marked Snap-On, and has no gut to the quick release or a ball detent. It was made to tighten aircraft blind rivets and originally was permanently attached to the socket. Your ratchet may have been a similar special purpose tool. It may have had a spinner handle (like the Bell System tool) or it may have used the same forging and had the handle removed.

At any rate, it is an interesting variation!

Point taken, it will come apart. What I meant to say was it doesn't come apart without ruining the tool.

Would a proto repair kit fit in it? It works great except for getting the sockets on nd off.

That is an odd forging on the handle, as well.
