Good Evening Everyone,

I have been a long time visitor, but this is my first post. I have been on the Jalopy Journal and Ford Barn (and posted) but this is my first time not just browsing the Garage Journal. There is a wealth of knowledge here so I am hoping someone may be able to help.

I recently had to install a new furnace in my 20' x 22' detached shop (used for classic car work mostly) because my older than dirt Bryant 30k BTU (model 30-342) had a bad valve and the valve/regulator combo that used are apparently very difficult to come by.

I hopped on CL and picked up a Reznor F50 (circa 1991) that "had no known issues". After getting the unit installed, I went to fire it up and a few problems popped up and the furnace will not stay running. The oddest of these problems is that heat only seems to be coming from the bottom left quarter of the output grate on the front of the furnace. The rest blows cool. It will also run for a while and abruptly shut itself off taking the pilot light with it.

I took the burners down and cleaned them up. I can confirm they are all lighting. All of the heat exchangers seem to be getting hot. A note about my natural gas setup is there are no regulators in the house. There is one directly off the meter and after it enters my house, none of the gas appliances have regulators. The gas line runs through the house to my detached garage (12' from the main house).

I originally had a regulator hooked to the new hanging furnace and removed it to see if that was impeding gas flow. It did not change anything.

If anyone has any insight, it would be appreciated.

Plan C is to install a brand new 100k BTU Reznor V3 that I was holding onto for a new garage I was hoping to build, but I think that is too much furnace for a 20' x 22' garage.

I'd start from the gas line and work my way back. Do you have a manometer? Check gas pressure going into the unit and burner regulator pressure are within spec.

Also you mentioned that there is only heat coming from the bottom corner of the unit but the exchanger is getting hot. Is there some type of air blockage preventing air from passing through the exchanger ? Maybe you are tripping a limit switch because you aren't getting enough air flow

From what I can tell everything looks to be clear. I believe all three burners are lighting.

Right now I am thinking of just pulling it and installing the brand new unit I had been saving for a new garage at some point. The new garage may be a long way off.

I will try to get a manometer to test gas line pressure first though.
