Jamie, I am in the process of moving into a house. I was lucky enough to start with a clean slate.

The racks are Hyloft, about $70 a piece from Lowes or Home Depot. 4 of the racks are mounted under the garage door and not visible when up.

I also added some accessory holders to the racks agains the wall. These hold my fishing rods (my obsession) and othe misc items that I always use.

The Kayaks are held up by 2 methods: 4 eye bolts secured into the joists and the pulley system bike holder. The jury is still out on the pulley system.

Still need to clean up and organize a whole lot more.

That space above the garage door can hold a lot.

You can see I have wood shelves to the right, and then (because of the particular design of my garage) I'm able to do long stock on the left.

I could have gone further, but didn't want the ceiling to seem to low.

In vegas there is no attic storage so every thing is stored in the garage in racks. I have 6 of those Hyloft racks and at $70 apiece, the 2 X 4 method is much cheaper. To bad I lack the insight to figure that out on my own. Probably could have saved quite a bit of cash.
