Anyone do their own "as built's" on the property/garage/house they bought?
Have trouble getting plans from the builder and or county?

I have a book of my house that I have started that I have all of the as built's I have created through exploration. I finally got the septic tank info after a year of living there and have figured out all of the electrical, video cameras, well etc. etc.

What have you done?
What do you include?
What length do you go to to document your space?

Thought this would be a good topic to share tips and information.

What's an "as-built"?

There are plans, blueprints, and descriptions of how the work should be completed, but in the end, you're left with the product "as-built". So, you document what the "as-built" product is.

In the chemical engineering world, since lots of changes are made in the field during construction that deviate from what's on the drawings or blueprints, one of the final deliverables to the client would be "As-Built" drawings reflecting how the Pipe Fitters ACTUALLY routed pipe and where fittings are located since matching a 3D model created a year ago (or longer) may not be practical.

In a house, it would be things like how electrical circuits were run, how plumbing was piped, how loads were supported, walls framed, etc.

It's all in my head, except for the photographs that I take during projects. It's good to be able to go back to a photo and pick out details that you might have forgotten about, or overlooked while working on an un-related project in the same space.

I have a lot of it in my head to, but I vowed after 5 houses, all older, to make it easier on myself and whomever may live in the house after me (If thats ever the case) to create and document the building. Maybe it's just the designer in me.

Plans on older houses are hard to get around here from the county and from my personal and professional experience, as noted above, rarely find anything to be built as blueprinted.

There are always variances and not all of them get noted during the construction process. I'm surprised more people don't do it or have them.

I am in information technology, we don't document anything.

Very true, if we do actually document things, its because we were forced to and it usually consists of the Table of contents, chapter 1 and some statement about being in progress....

As for the topic...I have done nothing with my house. Figure the next guy can figure it all out.

Damn straight  I've built a garage, wired the house, replumbed, stripped siding, etc. I did take some pictures. Everything was pretty much made up as I went along. For wiring, I made notes on the junction boxes. Those I didn't note, I have no farking clue. And I've already been back up there and sat in the heat wondering what the F I did on that Fn run. Whoever gets the house when we're gone, gets the **** with it.
