First, awesome fridge! I'll also second the idea of finding one already working, which is actually not what I did haha (luckily, my '34 Frigidaire only has an electrical issue and the refrigerant line is intact). But on some of those fridges, even up til about 1940 (or maybe after, who knows), a lot of them used sulfur dioxide as a refrigerant, which is a nasty, nasty substance. In the little research I did on fridges (trying to find out more about what my fridge uses, Dichrlorotetroflouromethane, R-114), a lot of fridges from the old days used methyl chloride and sulfur dioxide. I read somewhere that once said that due to some deaths where leaking fridges were involved (back in the late 1920s-1930s), they kept working on refrigerants until they settled on R-12 which was the standard for a long, long time. Many times, you can look around on the back/bottom of the fridge and it will have a tag that denotes the refrigerant used.
GE/Frigidaire made some awesome boxes back in the day. They are all beautiful and the inside is often just as pretty. Good luck in your search!
Here are some shots of mine before I cleaned it up:

All my photos of what I've done to it so far are 'unavailable' due to Fotki issues, but hopefully I'll see them up again soon (I hope).
I have a Frigidaire exactly like this , mine has been repainted in to Forties Pepsi colours..Of coarse its buried in my shop or I'd take a photo of it..In the spring..
Found it. It's a Philco from the late 1940's. Still works great, keeps stuff ice cold. Looks identical to this one but paint is faded on mine...

Probably paint mind a 50's teal/turquoise color.
I wanted to comment and tell you that your shop area looks wonderful - nice, bright and clean. Right on!![]()
Anyone have a good latch fix to make this thing usable, but safe for my kids?
put in before just thought I give it another exposure
My first post here on Garagejournal
Bought this Westinghouse off my neighbor for $50. Works great, just need to replace the power cord, which is a little iffy at the plug.
Thought I was going to do a hot rod theme on it, black with flames, or black with some pinstriping, but having second thoughts now.
I have 50's white metal cabinets with a stainless (looking) top that I repurposed as my workbench, so this would match if I took it back to just plain white.
Or neighbor suggested sanding it down and giving it a rat rod look. I'm not into the rat rod fad though, so am not too hip on that.
I've got an 85 Mustang in Canyon Red, but it's sitting collecting dust as I buy and restore old Schwinns, so I'm kinda thinking some type of bike theme...
It's going to be cool regardless.
Thanks to Scottwi we were able to transform our fridge into something special. THANKS Scott!!!!!!
I was in a shop last week that had a 1950's chest vending machine.
Canada Dry logo on it, but it 5 or 6 slots inside where different bottles would hang from their caps.
You slid the bottle you wanted over to a "Holding cell" at the end and put in your monet tp release it.
5 cents a bottle.
It still worked.
You needed a nickle.
It wasn't for sale.
Here is our Fridge in the client lounge. We didn't like the look of a plain white one, after all graphics are what we do.
If anyone is interested in custom graphics PM me.

Oh great, another GJ inspired project to add to the growing list. I've had an old 50's frig for about ten years, works but don't use. Guess I have to keep it, paint it, post it. Doing GJ projects are turning into a full time job.
