Official Icon Tools Thread

I didn't find a thread just for Icon tools and figured they should have their own. Seems like there is a growing following and for good reason, most of their tools seem to be above average quality. I picked up a 1/2" and 3/8" digital torque wrenche, took advantage of the recent 30% off.

I haven't really used them, 1/2" I just used to torque some lug nuts, not much off a test. They feel good in hand, came with a calibration certificate, which I'll get doubled checked. Fit and finish is nice, snap on like. Came in decent ridgid cases with clear fronts so I'll keep them stored in them.

I've also picked up a few other Icon tools which I'm happy with and I'm sure I'll be adding as I go. So let's hear what Icon tools you have and if you like them? Hate them? Would you buy them again?

All I've got are two of the locking flex 1/4" ratchets - one seems to have a tiny bit more slop in the locking mechanism than the other but otherwise they're very nice. I intended to do the 3/8" Snap On swap in one but ended up taking one to work so I had a locking flex head option there. If they ever go on discount again I'll grab another for the 3/8" swap.

I went in yesterday to get some backup home sockets (Quinn 3/8 set @ 35% off) and passed on one of the 14" locking flex 3/8" ratchets for $80. Icon is a feat of marketing for HF - somewhat premium MSRP but not necessarily superior to other Taiwan-sourced options. On the other hand Harbor Freight's cyclical sale strategy means that I'm going to feel like I got a bad deal if I ever pay retail - and if I need a tool when there's not a HF sale on it, I'll probably end up buying elsewhere because of that.

I have not used it yet, but the case is so large it won't fit into any of my tool case drawers, so it's sitting in the lower open area of the rolling tool cart.

So far, only the 1/2" and 3/8" digital torque wrenches. I also took advantage of the 30% off sale. I've not had a chance to use them yet, so no informed opinions so far.

I have to add these tap and die sets, hss,clearly marked and so far they work well. Picked up on sale, guaranteed for life, not sure how they would replace them.

I have a lot of icon stuff, none of its been bad and some of its been great. Being able to run out and grab something decent on a moments notice, or get a warranty with zero hassle is really nice.

None of it is as nice as Snapon (except their chrome, SO chrome kinda *****—but I digress) but icon is definitely “pro quality”.

Standouts:

-Tap&Die sets - sharp & tough. Lifetime guarantee for broken taps. The handles **** but oh well. Nice “just in case” set to have

-punch/chisel set - rebranded mayhew 150 punches & chisels, they’re very durable. Nice sturdy pouch. Best of all - lifetime guarantee

-stubby flex head ratchet wrenches - I love these, they’re the perfect size stubby. Big enough to get your hand on them but small enough to fit most any place. Very nice ratcheting action.

All my stuff is at work so I’ll have to wait until tomorrow to post pictures.

Honestly didn't need them. I'm not a mechanic and have managed to get through life so far with the 3-4 pairof lisle branded snap ring pliers I've had for the past 20+ year

I forgot I bought these when they had 30% off, i have to say, the chrome has a good feel to it. Back drag in there 3/8 long handle is ok, I think it needs to be used a little more.

I have to say for the price this is a great knife, especially on sale. It really takes abuse and holds a decent edge. Even better if you break it hf is happy to exchange it, even if it's just dull. Now I'm not returning a dull knife but I did snap the tip and no problem exchanging it.
