Finally got my 9 piece Craftsman Socket set today, and wouldn't you know it, there's a rogue Armstrong socket in the lot!

It gets better, the Armstrong socket is embossed "1 Inch" yet it has a large "25" laser etched on the side.:willy_nil

It's a shame that some US tool companies can get so screwed up. At least we have brands like Channellock and Snap-On.

That is REALLY interesting. It shows that they do not use a separate broaching for the two sizes. I always wondered about that on the super close ones like 3/4, 19mm.

Well, we now know for absolute certainty that Craftsman and Armstrong sockets are made in the same building. :D

I do have another 25mm Craftsman 3/4 drive socket, and when measured and compared, the broachings are indeed different. The Craftsman has around a 1/2 millimeter narrower broaching.

Interesting. I'm sure there is some innocent explanation.

snap-on metric AND standard sockets, seems to be common thing in 3/4 drive?

Yes, this may be normal for Armstrong in 3/4 drive on certain sockets that they deem very close? With 3/4 drive perhaps the thinking is on such big fasteners relatively small differences do not matter.

DSLTRK, can you tell us what the manufacturer code is on the Craftsman sockets? I'm wondering if it is V^.

Thanks,
Steve

All the 3/4" drive stuff at my local Sears is now Chinese. Crazy.

surely you are talking about the ratchets and accessories.... right?

i would imagine if there were china sockets out there, we would have heard something by now...

I was thinking the same thing but 3/4" drive isnt a very common socket to buy so it would take a little longer to get out there. If you look on Craftsmans website they are getting rid of the dual marked sockets and the pictures on the other stuff dont look the same as USA craftsman sockets.

When the couple of local Sears stores nearest me did their tool section reset, the 3/4" drive stuff got pared down considerably. All the metric size sockets went away leaving only inch stuff but still seem to be USA marked for now. The ratchet, t-bar, flex handle extension stuff seems to China now.

Probaly fell on the floor at changeover, somebody picked it up and put it back on the line not realizing it was a different brand.

Not surprising that they're mixed up. A couple years ago I was in Lowes, and inside of the Kobalt ratchet blister pack was a Craftsman raised panel ratchet. I almost bought it as a souvenir but wound up deciding that it was still a waste of money. Pretty neat though!

I didn't look at the sockets, just the ratchets and breaker bars. Those were Chinese. For all I know the sockets could still be US. You are probably right. In stores the lower drive sizes are Chinese while sockets are still US (for now) so it would stand to reason that the 3/4" is the same as well.

kobalt was once williams made, and then danaher, and now taiwan made.

the danaher stuff was all craftsman stuff, with slight cosmetic differences, like handle shapes, and selectors, and things of that nature. my local lowes still has one lonely danaher made 3/8 deep socket set sitting on the shelf.... been there for a LONG time...

This is a good example of why I can't stand lowes. You think the person stocking these would have noticed and cared enough to pull the odd looking ratchet out of stock. It's the same as stocking a pack of light bulbs with a package full of broken glass. The employees just don't care. I don't blame them personally, its just the way the store is run.

In all fairness, people who stock shelves quite often load multiple items at once, so this could have been 2-deep in the pile as it was put onto the hook.
