I am in the planning stage of a new 48x80x16 pole barn. Currently I have (2) 12x14 doors on the gable end, with 8’ spacing around the doors.
Would it be more beneficial for (3) 12x14 doors and less wall space or (2) doors and more wall space?
It depends on how you are going to use it. Some people are ok with driving in a door and then turning to get to the parking space. Larger buildings make this easier. But it wastes the space that you need to leave open to move vehicles. OTOH if it's a wood working shop or won't contain many vehicles, then that's less of a concern.
I wanted to maximize space so I put three doors in the 40x56 shop room and two in the 40x24 farm equipment storage room. The doors cost more but less than making the building bigger would have. I don't think I'll run out of wall space but if I do I'll make or buy free standing shelves. I'm not that big on wall space anyhow. Other people may be.
I spent a lot of time thinking drawing and modeling with sketchup an earlier smaller shop that we didn't build. I took a lot of the same ideas for the one that's in the middle of construction.
