I am considering putting a used mobil home furnace in my barn. I was told that I could use a 55 gallon as the fuel oil (kero) tank. I believe it would have a Miller burner.

Any tips or pictures of these setups that anybody would care to share?

Any step by steps including list of needed materials>

Thanks for your help!!

We did this years ago over at my Dads place, and I'm thinking of going that route with my new shop ( exterior needs 1/2 a day more then I start on the inside). Get a good clean steel drum it should have a big threaded opening, about 2" I think and a small opening about 3/4 or 1". Bush the small hole down to the size of your feeder line to the furnace, use the big hole for a conbination filler and vent so it will drain into the furnace.Build a rack to hold the barrel on its side. Angle the rack slightly so any sediment settles to the back of the barrel away from the outlet. You can use an engine hoist to load it into your pickup and take it to be filled or if you have an oil furnace in your house just have your delivery guy fill it when he is there. Your rack will need to hold 4 or 5 hundred pounds (I don't know exactly what fuel oil weighs). Good luck I think you will be happy with it. Mike

Good luck getting someone to deliver to it.

2. most companies have delivery minimums

Thanks Mike in Ohio!

As far as the delivery of the product, that's not a problem. We have a Monitor in the finished family room, and have a Monitor in the garage where the boss parks :) It has a 10 gallon tank and a pump. I get to fill it every 2-3 weeks. The house has a 275 tank that I put a hand pump on, so when the small Moniotr needs a drink, I get it from the big tank.

As far as the 55 gallon drum on it's side, I would fill it by putting on a 90 degree elbow and a cap I take it?

I just have to hunt up a decent drum. Would it be OK to say get one that had transmission fluid or oil in it, I am hoping that if I put 30 or so gallons of keresene in the drum, it would dilute the old contents......thoughts?

Thanks for all of everybodys help, this place is amazing!!!!!

Where in NH are you?

I have a spray foam insulation company and the product comes in 55g drums. I use the drums to buy off-road diesel for the equipment and house for years.

If you want you can have as many as you would like for free. Let me know, we go all over the state.

Dad never has any problem, he is retired now so when the oil guy shows up he just asks him to fill the barrel too. The delivery minimum is a different problem which is why I mentioned loading it in the truck to have it filled off site. Mike

Most companies around me won't fill a barrel now because of liability. There is no doubt it can work but if something happens they're on the hook.

Hi Mike,

I tried to PM you, but your settings do not allow you to receive PM's.

I don't clean them, I just fill them with diesel and use it for all my equipment (generator, heaters, tractor, truck etc). You could swish around a gallon or two of diesel or kero if you wanted, but I wouldn't bother.

We are working at Baboosic Lake this week.

I usually just bring the empty drums to the dump every week in the scrap metal pile. I have one empty now and will have several more this week into next if you need more than one.

Most furnaces do not have a fule pump, so you just have to have the barrel higher than the burner.
In hilly parts of the country I have seen 55 gal drums just inside the front gate and a 1/4 inch copper line going down the sidewalk to the house.
The line is sometimes buried, some times not.
Depending on where the bungs are, the drums are upright or on their sides.
This lets the delivery guy fill it easy.
