oil burner disconnect switch

What is the requirement for having a disconnect switch on the main floor when the oil burner is located in the cellar? In my home, there is a switch located high on the hallway wall that controls the oil burner in the cellar. The switch on the main floor interrupts the power to the switch on the burner case, so if it is turned off, the switch on the burner has no power. The burner itself has a switch mounted on the case to turn off for burner servicing. The main floor switch wiring was installed early in the construction, and later during construction, the stairway to the cellar was moved to the opposite end of the cellar. Is the switch required to be near the cellar stairs? Is this switch actually required by code? The burner itself has a switch mounted on the case to turn off for burner servicing.

Generally the switch is required at the entrance to the space where the oil heater is, and must shut off all power (both burner and fans) to the furnace. Required by code? Yes.

The idea is that if the furnace is spouting flames, you can shut it off without entering the (heat/smoke filled) room or space.

There is also required a thermal fuel oil shutoff as well. This device cuts the oil flow when ambient temps rise above a certain level.

thats not something the NEC would dictate. It would be in whatever code covers oil burners.

Yeah, it's a boiler code, and the requirements will vary depending on the state you live in.

im not sure on exactly whats code, but i have one at the top of the interior stairs, and another at the top of the exterior stairs. to aid the ff the conduit housing the wires have been painted red, and glow tape squares have been installed around the stitches
