I need some help on modifying the oil drain port on my Campbell Hausfeld VT6275 60 gal compressor.
Stock it is just a cap into the compressor housing.

What I would like to do is add a pipe to extend the opening out so when I change the oil it doesn't just drain down the side of the tank.

I remember reading a while back that the threads were not standard threads.

I was wondering if anyone else has done this and if so what did they use for pipe threads?

I had that same compressor. 1/8" NPT ****** and you're good to go. Add a ball valve or something to the end if you want, I just put a cap on the end of mine. It's not like you're changing the oil every week.

Another slightly different option for you...

I used a 1/8" ******, hex coupling, and a plug. The hex coupling allows you to use two wrenches to remove the plug without disturbing the threaded joint going into the pump housing. It also gives the bail of a bucket something to hang on to when you're draining the oil (doesn't slip off the pipe). I bought a brass plug, but you can reuse the original one.

Here's another view of the parts before I installed them...

Shopnut has a great point. I had to hold my extension with a pair of Channellocks when I took the cap off to keep from unscrewing the ****** from the compressor crankcase.

His idea is much better.

pipe and ball valve and hang a ice cream pail on it. On the elbow there is a plug inside for back up
