So I've been doing some searching and see that some have gotten the Northern oil dolly, some have gotten the HF 18 gallon air drain and some have gotten the 8 gallon manuals.

Can anybody tell me long term experiences?

I was looking at the ranger 18 gallon with manual pump for like $140 delivered.

http://www.bendpak.com/shop-equipment/oil-drains/rd-18g.aspx

Not sure if the HF for around the same price is better or worse.

Thanks

If you do this daily or even weekly I can understand, but if you only do your personal vehicle's every few months, I don't get it. I use empty gallon milk jugs or 5 gallon oil jugs to store mine. Unless you have the room to keep a big 15 quart+ container half filled with oil for months at a time, I think you should stick to a regular oil drain pan. But, to each his own. Milk jugs work perfectly for me. Plus, I drink a gallon of milk myself every two days. I have enough to go around...

I'm not sure what bry@n's application is, but I do oil changes for my 6.0 Powerstroke diesel and it takes 15 qts. I currently use a Lisle 17952 Green Drain Pan - 4.5 Gallon Capacity but I still have to drain that back into the gallon containers I buy for storage/transport. Anyways, I can see the appeal of having a sealed drain pan without having to do the individual drains for storage.

I use the HF daily and it's been prefect! I also added a transmission oil pan that sits in it perfectly so I can get the filter and oil at the same time. Just remember to close the valve before emptying or else you'll have a fountain of oil...ask me how I know

I understand. I had a 7.3L that held 3 gallons also. I drained it into a large BJ's tub/container. I just don't have the room in my garage for all that fancy stuff. Barely have enough room for one car with all the sh*t in it. Maybe I'm jealous...

Personally I like the Lisle 17432: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002SR7U6/?tag=atomicindus08-20

Works well for me. I thought about buying the metal canister type, but I didn't like the idea of having to drain it pneumatically into ANOTHER container in order to take it to the recycling center for disposal.

With the Lisle I can just take off the tube and funnel, put it in the back of my truck, and then empty it out.

Works great and I scored mine as a Amazon Hot Deal for less than $60 shipped.

I will second the Lisle oil drain. I bought one after looking at the available pieces at Northern Tool and Harbor Freight. The Lisle is well made, and made in the USA too. I liked it so well that I bought another for my dad to use at his place.

I won't use it everyday, but I'm lazy. I don't want to deal with it every time I change oil. I generally empty my oil into 2 different jugs and when they are close to full, I bring them tot he recycle joint.

Being able to hold 18 gallon would be a help

I just noticed I misread your original requirement of 18 gallons. For some reason that translated to 18 qts in my mind which is why I suggested the 24 qt container earlier. Sorry about that. The Lisle 17432 Jarhead suggested looks good. More money than I'd want to spend though. He's lucky to have caught it for $60 vs the current $136 it costs today.

gdocktor, my garage is stuffed to the gills. I need to get it cleaned back up and organized. I do have a shelf area in the back corner dedicated to my drain pans, funnels and used oil. I just store the used oil in the same gallon jugs I buy it in. That or empty windshield washer jugs or laundry detergent jugs. Really, any good gallon jugs that have a solid cap. I don't trust milk jugs to not leak. I usually take mine to O'Reilly's or Autozone. O'Reilly's has a 5 gallon limit though. Not sure about Autozone. Of course, I don't have to stand around waiting to get my container back either. Just drop and go.

My Ranger was probably the worst investment out of all the shop equipment I purchased, build the quality was horrible, wheels fell off. welds broke etc.

What do you need 18 gallon capacity for? I use the 8 gallon lisles at work and they can't be beat. good high and low, very easy to empty into a 5 gallon bucket.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002SR7TM/?tag=atomicindus08-20

buy 2 of them, Almost the same price as 1 bigger one and 16 gallon capacity.

I don't need 18 gallon. I looked merely based on the price. For $40 more I'd be getting a hand pump and more capacity.

I appreciate your input. Thanks for the update.

How do you transport 18 gallons to dispose of it, seems like it would be heavy to load up. I've got an old 5 gallon gas can I fill up. Takes almost a year to do so with 7500 mile oil changes.

I highly recommend NOT to store over 5 gallons at a time. Something always happen to it some how, tip over or lowered the car on it. Etc. the safest is when the oil is in the jug you bought the oil in. Then take it to recycle anytime.

I have had the HF dolly but emptying it into jugs when The dolly is full is guaranteed to make a mess. Plus you may get lazy like I did and the next car oil overflow the dolly.

Now I use a 5 gal. Bucket for drain and as I drain the oil while it is warm, I plug this pump in and transfer the oil into empty jug. It has been the cleanest system yet. It's slow but it's controllable. By the time the car is drained I also have the drained oil inside the jugs

I have this one from Northern Tool. I only bought that particular one because of the price at the time was less than the HF one just like it. There are several of them on Amazon for just over $100. They all look about the same. I am satisfied with the one I have. I added this drain funnel to have a bigger target and be able to catch oil pan and filter at once. I put a piece of thin window AC foam filter in the funnel to control splatter. Lisle also makes a pad for the same purpose, but it costs more.

For transport to recycling I use the same 5 gal hyd. oil buckets I used when I changed oil on jack stands or ramps.

I dunno man. Seems like it'd be pretty hard to knock over 5 gallons worth of thick liquid. Much less an even greater amount. You ever picked up a 5 gallon bucket of paint? It's not all that light.

The knocking over of 5 gallon bucket of oil came directly from this forum.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=615910

I have tipped my oil dolly as well when backing out the car dragged it down.

So I may have less luck regarding oil spill than most. But I can imagine with what would happen when I try to carry the 5 gallon bucket of oil in my car. Anyway I have researched into all kinds of mess free, oil transfer method in the home garage including the pump built into that ranger one, which is a transfer barrel pump.

I picked up a well used oil drain collector several months back.
