Oil Drain Dolly

I did some searching, but did not find any good suggestions. I am looking for a good quality, reasonably priced oil drain dolly. The largest volume is 14-16 qts of oil from one car. It will be used under a 4 post lift, and I would like to be able to put it in the back of a SUV completely sealed to bring to the dump to drain.

I have seen the ones from Greg Smith, Harbor Freight, Northern Tool, etc, but unless you can see it first hand, they may be flimsy ****.

What do you guy's recommend.

We have ones at work made by Orion. they're pretty good, and they also have a thing to extract the oil by using compressed air, which is very handy.

the downside is that when full they have to stay upright as the tube that goes from the drainer to the tank doesn't completely seal.

I have the HF one. The can itself is pretty stiff to me, I don't see it falling apart soon, the wheels are also pretty good they are like creeper wheels. I don't want to get too spendy on this, it's just a container.. My gripe is that there is no cap to plug where the tube goes, still trying to figure out what thread it is. I want to carry it to the store for disposal.

Use a 55 gallon drum on a dolly, with a pipe and large funnel. When full call the oil company. Crude is over $100 a barrel ....well it sounded like a good idea. lol

another idea I read somewhere is just to put your bucket / pan, maybe 5 gallon bucket on one of the mechanic's seat or stool .. it telescope up and down, don't tip it over though!

but I got alot of compliments on my HF dolly already... makes feel like a pro when I am not..

I am getting closer to finding the plug for it, seems like some kind of drum barrel metric plug.. need to do some measuring..

Check around. You may want to keep it in a 35 or 55 gallon drum and then have someone with a waste oil heater to pick it up when full. More and more people have the heaters and are looking for oil to take or you may be able to make a few bucks off of it.

A friend told me that where he works they'll pay $15 per 55 gallon drum of recycled oil. Only issue is that you have to bring it to them. I'd consider just saving it for myself and putting in an oil heater but I wonder if they leave a smell or light film on everything in a typical 2 car garage application. Anyone have an oil heater in a residential setting? How much oil does it need to run one full winter day?

Also, I thought about getting a 5-8 gallon dolly but then found out that Autozone won't typically take more than 5 quarts of recycled oil per customer/visit. Also, none of the oil dollies seem to have a cap on them which would make transporting an issue. I don't want to have to dump the oil from the dolly onto gallon containers to then take to autozone, which is what I'm doing now from an oil pan.

A friend of mine who owns a local shop just installed a use oil heater. I will come walking into the shop with a couple 5 quart jugs of used oil announcing "free heat!" He smiles and puts it into the oil burner drum... it's always nice and toasty warm in the shop!

I have an 18 gallon Todd oil lift drain canister on casters that has served me well for 15 years. It easily rolls around and has a nice big quickly adjustable height funnel.

Once a year I cart it off to a friends business and dump it in his waste heating oil tank.

Some places have waste oil trucks that go around to business to collect, but it is getting harder to find a business that wants to give away waste oil as most have invested in their own heaters. The heaters burn great. I don't think they are as clean burning as a house furnace because of what goes thru them, but the ones that I have been around, I have not noticed any smells coming from them. They are vented just as in a conventional furnace. For residential use though I don't think it would be a wise investment due to the fact of trying to aquire waste oil. Most places that have them are businesses that do oil changes, etc.

I find more than 5 gals too heavy to handle. That is 20 quarts.
I drain into a plain oil pan with a spout that I empty into and then hang on a cord above a 5 gal plastic pail over night to let it drain dry. A funnel makes it easy.
Most pails I find have a plastic spout in the lid so that I don't even have to take the lid off.
When it is full I can take in and just leave it.

I have the Lincoln in the picture that I snagged on EBay a couple of years ago for $120 in as new condition. That's less than the China knock-offs are selling for. I empty it into 5 gallon jerry cans and hump them down to Auto-Zone once or twice a year. I had one of the Harbor Freight POS's that held about 16 gallons (orange plastic tank) couldn't stand the poor quality. I searched for several months until the Lincoln came up on EBay. The thing lists for $400+ but can be had for a lot less if you keep your eyes open. Kind of like high end Snap-on boxes selling for deep discounts on the used market.
