I work on forklifts for a living and sometimes run into filters that the ONLY way to remove them in with a cap style filter wrench. I originally bought the metal ones but they are just not grabbing some of the filters. I will try the plastic ones, but not sure what sizes I should get. What are the common sizes on say most 4 and 6 cylinder engines? I work on any and all brands so I never know what filter I will run into. Most filters do have the shape to except a cap wrench, but I can never get the metal ones to work. I hate to buy the full master sets cause I just dont have the room for all of the un-needed extras. What size and brand should I get so I no longer have to fight this stuff laying in the dirt?

if you had hard time getting off oil filters with metal cup style, plastic cup will not work at all.

get this style if it can fit.

I have the adjustable ones, but some places are just too tight for them. I work on every brand engine you can imagine. We use a lot a napa/wix filters. One I fight every time is the hyster forklifts with the gm 4.3 v-6. Its right against the oil pan with the engine mount next to it.

One thing about forklifts is that people go years without an oil change so the filter is usually stuck. Also, ya have to really over tighten the oil filters due to the constant bouncing around the forklift experiences on gravel yards. I had one on a transmission I had to literally beat off with a two foot long chisel and 3 pound hammer before it finally loosened.

I prefer the cup style too. But I don't always have the size I need. Today I used the channellock pliers style to get the filter off a ford probe. If you don't have them in your arsenal you should get them.
I don't like the grabby three arm thingys because it takes two hands at first.

Hazet and Stahlwille sell individual filter wrenches.

I have a 74mm Matador MB branded filter wrench and it works on both MB's and my Isuzu.
