I'm a lube tech at Toyota, you need one of these:

make sure you get one that has the 3/8 drive hole in it, its a PITA to get one that only has the 15/16" drive on it
some guys at my work use a plyers type wrench for the MZ series motors but I havent needed one.
also pick up a long 14MM for drain plugs, your hands will get a lot less sore, some of those plugs are tight. matco makes one part #RBZXL1314

I use the cup style on my 92 Prizm (toyota 1.6) I have also a 90 ****** and use the strap style with no handle for a 3/8 drive ratchet, I would be willing to think that the plier style would be ok to have too but might be hard to get into place on some models depending on where the filter is located
