Oil filter wrenches, do they breed in the dark?

My son is out finishing up an oil change, and I realized how many of the dang things I have on the oversize nail/tent stake they hang on...

And this is only the strap kind, somewhere in the garage one of the socket style that will take a bar or a ratchet is hiding (probably breeding...) but a search in the obvious places didn't turn it up...

Anyone else have more than they remember buying? I only think I bought maybe 1 or 2, plus the socket one that is missing... :dunno:

Maybe all of the ones that I have tossed out came to live in your box. I can't find many modern cars that have the clearance to support that style.

yeah, thats the problem with those. I have three of that style, never used one. I prefer the cup/socket type which I have at least 10 of and they're not cheap.. the specialty ones like on new toyotas can be up to $25 a piece!

Hey Outlaw,

Don't know anything about oil filter wrench husbandry, but I do know

that when I go shopping at curbside department stores, I inevitably

fish out one that looks similar to the ones in the pic you posted.

Usually, they are too frail to be a keeper, and I end up throwing

them back. However, the collection I do have at home, mostly the

"socket" type, do seem to be multiplying as per Genesis directs !

Funny, I just finished organizing and tossing some of mine!
Picked up this set, kept this old pinch style one and purchased two new small and large "one size fits most" cup style.

Maybe the ones I tossed made their way to your home?

Honestly, I simply got fed up with the wrenches I had NOT fitting what I was working on!

I still want to get a strap style for that "just in case" filter I know I'll run across!

Here is my old trusty "go to" filter wrench for when nothing else works! Picked it up in 1976 at Sears of Medford in the Rogue Valley of Southern Oregon when I lived there.

Looking at the picture again, reminds me...

I built an "oil filter wrench" to fit the OD of a 20# propane tank, so that when empty

I could wind out the valve. Works pretty good. And yes, I am extremely careful about

making sure the tank is MT.

I need to do something on an even larger scale, I have a couple of plastic 55 gallon barrels that actually screw together, and want to open one up for cleaning and use...

on a whim I bought one of those big pliers type ones with the staggered teeth. Wish I would have bought it years ago, the hassles it would have saved me...

The channel lock style and the cup style are all that I use. And I only use the channel lock style one when the cup one won't work.

My GF's jeep patriot had a mopar filter on it from the factory. Couldn't get the cup wrench to grab and there was no room for anything else so i mangled the **** out of it with the channel lock ones and then gently taped the cup wrench on there. AC Delco filter replaced it so I won't have that problem again. GM parts on a Chrysler car.
