I have an old 1/2 hp dayton motor. It has 2 places on either side of the motor for the bearings. My question is , what type oil and how often should I fill. It came off of an old bandsaw and I want to make a bench grinder/buffer out of it. Thanks, cutt

If you're talking about sleeve bearings, use some nondetergent 20 weight, 3-in-one, sewing machine oil. Detergent is hard on these type of bearings. Motor oil usually is detergent type. Frequency depends on usage. I'm sure you'll get lots of answers to this. My buddy who has an electric motor shop sells/gives away a zoom spout oiler with a long spout to reach tough places.

Here they sell oil for swamp cooler bearings. It says it's ok for the motor bearings too. It comes in a plastic squeezable bottle with an extendable spout. I'm sure it's just a sae20 or 30 nd oil.

if you have machine tools I have used Vactra 2 (way oils)

if you have tractors I have also used hydraulic oils

Either should be friendly to bronze. Whatever you do, do NOT use "rear differential" oil like an 85W140 or 80W90. This has EP additives designed for the steel-on-steel gearing and will chemically corrode the bronze.
