Oil Furnace Flue Temp Question

I have an OH3-72 Thermo-Pride furnace. An AF3 7-3/4 Beckett Burner Model and Tube Length with an F3 head using a 0.65X80H nozzle. Other than the nozzle data, I'm not sure what the rest of that info actual is! I just got it out of the tech manual for this particular furnace. This unit is probably around 20 years old (I bought the house a few years ago). Since I've had the house, I've had the furnace routinely maintained by an HVAC outfit. I am never here to see them actually do anything though. Maybe they just drive up, have a couple of my beers  and call it day. The flue contact temperature seems to be really HOT! In fact, it gets too almost too hot to touch. Is this normal :dunno:? Doesn't make sense to me and I am wondering if there is an excess build up of soot inside that hasn't been vac'd out that is causing a lot of heat to travel out the flue. The chimney that the flue discharges into is clean as a whistle! Cleaned it myself. Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

It will get to hot to touch over 400 degrees . Soot is an insulator so the temps would be less if it's sooted up.
Why are you concerned ? Because of the pipe being hot ?

The flue pipe gets hot -- the pipe will be way too hot to touch.

A good tuneup includes setting up the burner -- it requires some equipment. You can't just eye it and expect it to be spot on.

I have had units that ran for years with little adjustment and mess and others that were a constant pain.

They only run at around 85 percent at best so it's important to make sure they are set up correctly to get the most out of the expensive fuel.

Thanks for the feedback. Looks like I don't have a problem. I was simply concerned because it seemed to just be too hot. Looks like I'm good to go. Thanks again!

Thermopride is a copper clad HX. It is generally recognized in the oil industry as the premier product. Stay up with the maintenance. Get it cleaned at the end of this heating season. Don't wait until the fall. You are probably running around a 400* stack temp and that is good on oil.
