Oil Leak on Air Pump?

So now that I got my new to me compressor running it seems to be leaking oil out of the crankcase breather. It also produces a little smoke. The smoke is not really noticeable unless you are looking at the breather. I changed the oil to SAE-30 non detergent oil when I got the compressor. This compressor has been sitting unused for a few years. Is this just a case where I need to order a new gasket set and rebuild it? How difficult of a job is that? Its a 97 Quincy QT-5 for reference.

Your description of what is happening makes it sound like excessive blow-by, so possibly worn piston rings. I wonder if an automotive cylinder leak-down tester could be used to verify.

How hard of a job is it to replace the piston rings?

Is it getting up to pressure? If so I would be inclined to do a couple of quick oil changes just to be sure I've flushed anything out.

Yes, I was able to pump the tank up to 150PSI a few times on Sunday, when i was working on it.

To check comp rings you normally take head off, run the comp for 5 minutes or so and see if oil comes up past the rings.

Does this work only when the rings are severely worn?

If there is blow by into the crank case , wouldn't the head need to be on to create enough pressure?

I can see oil getting by the rings with the head off if they are severely worn, but wonder if this will diagnose blow by if they are only a little worn?

To OP... i have seen this happen if the crankcase is overfilled
