oil less air compressor

are they worth having for light use?
I can get I am pretty sure it is this model off a local ad for $50.00.
Probably about 60 mile round trip too.

I have a two gallon oil less I use for my brad nailer. Has been working for years, but very, very loud.

I own the 4gal HF oil compressor for over 10 years. It get used a lot in the first few years but it's a really good compressor. I still own it today and I highly recommend it if you want to do small tasks like:

-brad nailing
-framing nailing
-light duty impact
-pump tires

I don't think I paid more than $100 total years ago.

If you get the oil less, buy a box of ear plugs to go with it. In the end, it will self destruct. Too many good oil type compressors on the market.

I really liked my oiless when I was doing aluminum soffit and facia in the winter time. It would fire up no matter how cold it got. But....it IS noisy and won't last as long as one with oil. My bigger compressor I put a battery blanket on the compressor head and plugged it in first thing and by the time I started work it was warmed up enough to fire up. I worked to -25C.

I would not buy an oil less ever again. I had one and it took a **** twice. I bought a used 30 gal Husky pro off cl. Its pretty quiet and will power all my air tools and possible a hvlp gun.

I love having my small oilless... it sits in the shed and whenever I have a friend who needs to borrow it there is no issue. When I built my fence in the back yard I had a compressor that would do the job with no issues and could be moved around easily. Yes you can get small oiled compressors but it really is nice having something that requires no up keep at all.

I wouldn't want one for my day to day use but as a backup, or for mobility I like them...

I like them for portable use- the example of a back yard fence or shed build is a good use case. I would not use one in my garage anymore now that I have a 60 gallon upright.

They have their time and place.

I have a small 6 gallon Porter Cable pancake compressor that I got for Christmas. One of those Home Depot deals with the brad nailer included. I love it. It's actually quite quiet for an oilless unit, pumps up fast, has a convenient drain... nice compressor. I keep it in the house since it's light and can be easily carried with one hand by either myself or my wife while we're doing remodeling. It powers a framing nailer and brad nailer without issue, and will also run a impact wrench too.

Oilless units are not for your main compressor, especially if you're doing any kind of automotive work or need any serious volume of air. But you can't beat their portability.

I had a 20 gal oilless Sanborn for over 25 years and got a lot of good use out of it. I'm a hobbyist, so it wasn't used everyday. Was still working great when I sold it recently for $75. The only reason I sold it was I bought a big compressor for the garage and have another smaller, more portable for the race trailer. It didn't fit with my needs and was taking up floor space.

Yes, it was noisy, but the only maintenance problem I had was replacing the power switch about 12 years ago. They run hot, too, so you'll get more condensation out of them than an oiled machine.

I acquired one of these at no cost.

It took a bit of work to patch it back together but it was a good way to get a bit of air into a shop where I only have an extension cord to the next building. It worked for a while then the piston self destructed.

Now this piston is maybe a $1 part that one would expect to pay $10 for. but the only way you can get it is to buy the entire motor and compressor for $60 or $70. Which happens to be the same price they are selling refurbished units for.

Stay away. Far far away.
