Oil spills on VCT?

I've tried searching, but the search tool seems to output 0 results no matter what I try for a key word.. ??

Anyway, for those of you that have VCT flooring, how badly do they soak up oil?

I'm redoing my folks' garage for them... The concrete floor is 25 years old with multiple old oil stains and long time crud. I don't think I could prep this floor well enough for the epoxy that I wanted to put down, so I've convinced myself that VCT is probably the best bet for them. But one of my dad's old motorcycles ('81 GL1100) has a slow oil drip and he's not the type to go wipe it up daily.

I'll wax the floor when I'm done with it, but I'm thinking it will still stain the tile. My only question is how badly?

Maybe I should have introduced myself first before firing off a question as my first post. :)

I'm a mechanical engineer in MA with the fabrication/cars/motorcycles hobby bug. I lived in Attleboro for 10 years with my wife where I had a 24'x24' 2 car garage that I finished off sort of on the cheap, to house my CNC mill, lathe, and racebikes (LRRS #897):

(after the Bridgeport, but can't see as much of the garage)

In my old garage, I built my own cabinets/countertops, epoxied the floor, installed a hot water/air heat exchanger for heat from the oil fed boiler and tried to do a pretty good job with it.

A few weeks ago, my wife and I sold our house and put a down payment on a new home (with a 850 square foot 3 car garage), but they are only just breaking ground this week on the house! So in the meantime, we moved in with my folks. (Not quite what we had in mind for this stage in life, but hey - you do what you gotta do)

So while I'm here, I'm trying to make myself useful and I'm going to redo the garage here. I pulled out all the old wood dust covered benches and shelves that were in there and am getting ready to build some new cabinets and paint the concrete walls. New flourescent lighting, better storage, and then the floor. Originally I was going to do epoxy, but with the floors so old and oil soaked, I'm sure the epoxy won't fair well over the long haul, hence the VCT question.

Nice to meet you all!

Hey Chris,

Would your Dad put up with an aluminum oven tray, or something like it, under his bike?

I'm in a similar boat with my garage (except I've got a slightly drippy 1984 Mercedes 300SD) and I've pretty well come to the conclusion that VCT is the way to go for me.

I dithered about how I would finish the floor of my garage until I stumbled onto this site!

All the best,

Tim
