I have to replace the fluid in both the rear end and transmission on my 03 Corvette. Is there a better tool than a suction tool (messy and leakes). Thanks for the help, Jack

I used to use a old school metal one like this for the transaxle on my air cooled vws:

Here is a newer style from lubrimatic:

Now a days; it seems everyone is using plastic hand pumps; I don't really know if there is a "clean" way to work with 90 WT gear oil, just a messy thing to work with, plus that really good smell?! LOL

How about one of these "new fangled" units form Mityvac? They seem to be the "cats meow" right now!

eschoendorff has a vette, maybe he can help you; they also have these new fangled suction pumps too!

The transmission in my 89’ has a drain hole, does not yours? For the rear end, I used a small hand pump like the bottom one billymade posted. Used the hand pump to put the new fluid back in.

A few years back I bought basically a cap with a clear plastic hose attached that fits on the 1 liter or 4 liter containers. It is made by FLOTOOL and I have used it several times and find it quite acceptable considering it was very inexpensive. I also have a suction gun and it leaks every time I use it.

Attached is a photo I found on Google search.

+1 on the mighty Vac, two of them in the shop just so nothing gets delayed if one fills up or the owner decides to take one home with him. Its one of those tools that once you have it all sorts of tasks get thrown its way.

OTOH I can't think of half a dozen details I would do differently. ;) Number one would be to rearrange the air coupling so it "easily" goes on or off with one hand without bending a back or knee down to floor level.

Yup.... I did the same thing to my D36 rear end on my 93. I used a simple plunger pump like the first pic. Bought it at HF and it worked great. Now, my father-in-law has an Amphicar and his transmission is difficult to service. It has to come completely out of the car. So he bought a set up like the last pic that runs off shop air that will evacuate all the ****** fluid in a big hurry. Works pretty well, but I don't know how expensive it was.

We used to have a home-made "sump sucker" when I worked in the test lab. It was basically a tank with two fittings at the top, one for the sucker hose and oppisite it the other was connected to a vacuum pump. The tank also had a drain valve at the bottom. had it mounted to a cart and it worked really well.

Can you use gear oil 90W in them? How long until the seals go bad?

I had that before the oil safe. It did two diffs and a gearbox with 90wt. Wouldn't do them the next timeout tho. Seals all bad.
It was very messy cleaning the oil out and transferring to the oil safe.

The idea is a rip-off of the Motive Brake Bleeder -
Universal_Bleeder_2.jpg

THe Motive Brake bleeder uses a high quality bottle & pump made by Gilmour.
THe Gilmour garden sprayers start out ~$30 bucks - So its not the el cheapo $10 variety.

If seals are your concern- you can bypass the pump by adding an air line fitting or shrader valve to the container for an air compressor.
The other thing you could do is to use a two bottle system.
One bottle would be the reservoir for the gear oil and the second bottle would remain clean and serve as just to pressurize the container containing gear oil.

Back to the OP

The next best thing would be the 5 gallon pail pumps- especially if you buy gear oil by the bucket

I have used the $10 old skool hand tranfer pumps and they get messy to store and handle.

I have also used the Staylube bottle top (soap dispenser type pumps) - Problem is that they don't fit all brands of gear lube bottles and they are slow.
