Oiling air tools..

Ok go easy on me, I'm a relative noob to air tool maintenance.

Several of my Central Pneumatic tools state oil daily with an arrow pointing basically at the exhaust.

Where do I squirt the oil? Back into the exhaust? Seems an odd way to oil something..

Anyone care to set me straight?

1 or 2 drops max! I oil mine like that maybe once a month. They do not like too much oil.

if you use alot of oil, the excess will blow out. it will make a mess in your toolbox over time if you keep over oiling.

Yeah the excess just blows out, no big deal for me. I oil my tools every time I use them.

I put in a drop each time before use. As mentioned it will just blow out if over oiled.

I started off 20 years ago in bodyshops. You can ruin a paint job pretty quick over oiling the tools.

On my framing guns I put about 10 drops in them every morning. Sometimes another 10 at lunch if I`m shooting a lot of nails.

I actually called and talked to an engineer at Ingersol Rand about oiling their impact wrench. He said a few drops each day before use with Air Tool Oil or 10w equivalent. Said not to use anything above 10w.

I've been using 3-in1 oil and some very light oil from a Zoom-Spout-Oiler that is used for HVAC motor bearings. Am I slowly killing my air tools?

IR and many other air tools DO spec being greased. IR calls for their own grease, No. 115. I use it in all my air tools that require grease in the works.

Grease is injected through a fitting on the body of the tool, not the air inlet.

I believe my FAR72c has a grease fitting in the head. anything that moves in an air tool requires some sort of lubrication

Air tool oil is cheap. 1 or 2 drops a week on moderate use.

I believe there are oilless air tools from Dotco, IR, Atlas Copco, etc... They are designed to work in a clean environment.

I put a couple drops in occasionally. An older guy I worked with years ago told me to use ATF in them. Said not only was it automatic transmission fluid..it also meant air tool fluid..lol

I think that oil is fine.

I have a gallon of air tool oil that was tossed in when I bought my first bostich brad nailer in about 1987. more than a life time supply. I oil the tools each time I use them, my hired guys, well if I ask them did you oil the gun today? uhmm, no, not yet.

so, you guys seem to agree, if my 1/2" HF earthquake sit for weeks and then all I do is take my wheels off and put them back on, using put 2 drops of oil is probably too much, correct?

I guess, I'll switch to 1 drop.

That's a good point... I have a few tools with a fitting just for that purpose... I have never injected grease there. I oil a tool the first time I use it everyday with a few drops of marvel air tool oil.

What tools are you guys using where you have to inject the grease? And where do you get the grease?

No, I do not think 2 drops is too much.
That is just my opinion though.
I usually put a pretty good amount in, and let the excess blow out the exhaust.
I usually have an old rag there, and wipe the gun down a little bit.

I bought a 1lb can of 115 grease and it should last me 20 years. I use a mini grease gun to pump it in. You can't really over-do it, the excess grease will blow out when you hammer something hard. If you can feel a metallic hit when hand twisting your impact wrench anvil, it's time for some grease.

I bought one of these for $5, but the tip was not pointed enough to get in the fittings. I had to turn turn the point down on the lathe to match my higher quality gun.

I put 2 drops of paint ball gun oil in right before the first use and nail guns get 2 more drops with each relaod.
