Hello everyone, I have a need to set my upright compressor on its side and leave it that way when used. Would this cause any problems? The reason I want to do this is the garage at the house we are buying has steps in it up to the kitchen. Under those steps looks like a great place to box up and insulate to keep the compressor noise to a minimum. Thanks in advance for the help.

They could be morons (many are), but no less than 4 different Sears employees, when I loaded my upright compressor into the back of my Explorer, freaked out and warned against placing the compressor on it's side.
I ended up propping mine at about a 45-degree angle for the short trip home, and made sure to let it sit for about 24 hours before using, just in case...
I know the box had pictograms about keeping it upright, and the owner's manual says:
"Always store compressor in a
vertical position resting on the
rubber bumpers and wheels."
Of course, it doesn't paint any horror story of what would happen if you didn't.

If it's a regular splash lubricated pump (not oiless) then they were right. Many compressors come filled with "break-in" oil, and if they are layed sideways, it'll leak oil though then crankcase vent.
On oiless compressors it dosn't matter how you store it. But I wouldn't run a vertical oiless compressor in the horizontal position --

Eh, all I know is what they told me, what the box said, and what the user's manual says about storage.
Given that, I wouldn't store the thing on it's side, long term, but I wouldn't worry too much about transporting for a short trip.

Maybe they want to make sure that the pump and cylinder are out of "harm's way" during transport. Laying on the side might cause these items to get bumped and potentially damaged.
I've seen oiless contractor compressor's running in all sort of odd positions and get transported the same way.

It makes absolutely no difference which position an oilless compressor is run, except for the drain plug issue mentioned earlier. Campbell Hausfeld has several "Vertizontal" models, with two sets of feet that can operate either vertically or horizontally.

just put in another drain ****. drill a hole, weld in a bung, thread in the drain ****.
