Oily mess

So i went to HD the other day to get something to cover my newly built work bench with and ask the oldest sale guy there what was the best coating i can put on it to proect the wood and also to stop motor oil and stuff from staining the bench all over....( i will have a metal top on it soon)... well he told me to use this watco danish oil... sure it looks good but every little piece of dust and dirt sticks to the damm bench now and it is harder than **** to clean... so is there anything i can put over top of it to make it easier to clean???????

Sounds like you used too much. Danish oil finishes are nice, but you need to go easy on it and buff and dry it between coats.

I'm not sure that it's a good choice for a work bench. It's a nice finish, but it doesn't really protect that well.

Your best bet is to wipe it down with some thinner to remove most of it and try again.

What kind of wood is it? If you're eventually going to cover it anyway your best bet might just be a few coats of polyurethane. Marine varnish works great too.

well it is 2 levels and the top of the bench will be covered in metal but the bottom level still collects **** easily.. i followed the instructions to a tee and the bench is made of spruce.... will polyurethane stick to the bench with the oil in it.....

It should. Danish oil isn't really oil, IIRC it's an oil/varnish mix.
Give it 24 hours to dry, a light sanding and a few coats of poly should fix you right up.
