Ok building a new pole barn ??

Im building a 28 x 40 with 16ft walls mainly for storage, tractor and maybe a motorhome...also maybe down the road an upstairs 1 bdrm loft,,,
Question is about electric...id go underground to the building but running wiring for outlets etc,,,drill thru the laminated posts ???

I don't think you'd have to. Usually there is a wooden purlin that spaces the sheet metal off of the posts, I believe. Just run wire right behind it.

what everyone else said, unless you have the bookshelf girts, but most builders don't do that. I guess you could go up into the ceiling then down again, but that would come to a lot of wire.

Well, I'd show the pics of my build, but I've yet to fix the photobucket snafu. As stated in the posts above, we wired behind the post ("outside"), between the post and the exterior sheathing. The girts nailed to the posts leave a 1.5" gap to send the wires through. We also have bookshelf girts and ran the wires on top of them. That is, around the posts and on top of the girts.

I would not drill through the posts, even though I understand it may be okay.

Are you currently building? If so can you post pics. I am looking at the same size building.

As for running electric, like others said, you can just run behind the poles, or run drops from the top of the wall, however, that will get to be expensive, especially with 16 foot walls.

I ran my wire from the breaker panel up above the header. I then ran over to the post and put a junction box at the top of each post above the ceiling. I then pigtailed the wires in the junction box and sent one romex down the post to an outlet and another romex across the header to the next post. I put a recepercol on every post.

Does it make more sense to just surface mount conduit if you have bookcase girts?

I ran 1"& 2" conduit under the slab from the distribution panel to each post. Came up through the floor mounted on the interior wall. Then "T" off the riser at about 4'. Quad boxes, three to a 20a breaker 120v. The the 2" is for running 3ph and higher amp 240 single ph.

I ran 1" pvc conduit under the slab to all my outlet runs. made for less wiring runs.My building is 50x104 with 16ft sides.

Are you enclosing the walls, up to where the 2nd floor will go ? If so run the wire are conduit,up to where you will need it for the 2nd floor.Put jb at receptacle high, for the future, easier now than then. good luck.
