Ok..don't..laugh about my generator question

I bought a Blackmax generator (7000 W) a couple of yrs ago due to no power from tornadoes. I put Sta-bil in the gas and started it every few months and everything was perfect'o. It has an electric start as well as a pull start. I bought the electric start because my shoulders are no good anymore except to ache.

So I go out to start the thing last weekend and nothing. kaput. Battery is dead and I think the gas is old. Can i take my battery wall charger and hook it up (with the leads still attached) and try cranking it over and letting the generator do the charging while running out the old gas? Will I blow a fuse? Or Blow the battery up (and myself)?


I do know that I could take the battery off and charger it but this is more of a "what if" type of question that had me curious.

Use your battery charger to charge up the generators battery. If it won't come back, then replace it before starting. Small engine generators are usually not sized to fully charge dead batteries.

Dont try to crank it with the charger hooked up unless the charger has an "engine start" setting.

You could jump start it with a car and a pair of jumper cables though.

Now would be good time to improve your setup. Add fuel line shutoff so that when fuel goes bad, it's only in the tank and not also in carburetor. Make it habit of always running the genset out of fuel on those test runs.

Thus, the Stabil will help you keep tank gas fresh, but if it goes bad it's real easy to remove fuel line below the shutoff and drain that old gas into a container. Fill gas tank with new fuel and genset should be good to go.

Also, get yourself a Battery Tender to keep your battery in proper charge.

If it's one of those small batteries like for a motorcycle or ATV, don't charge it at more than 2 amps or your will surely kill it if it's not already dead.
